Defining the entry-level truck of Chevrolet’s heavy-duty line, the Silverado 2500HD is a significantly beefed-up version of the Silverado 1500. Introduced in 2001, the Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD replaced the C/K pickup truck-based 2500 model.
Arriving with a stronger frame, a more robust suspension and greater engine power, the result is improved towing and hauling abilities over light-duty pickup trucks. First-generation Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD pickup trucks came with standard power from a 6.0-liter V-8 gasoline engine with an optional 8.1-liter V-8 and a Duramax 6.6-liter turbocharged diesel available. Revised in 2007, the Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD received refreshed styling and a stronger ladder frame.
While the second-generation Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD discontinued the larger gasoline engine, the 6.0-liter Vortec 6000 V-8 received a power boost to 353 horsepower (upgraded to 360 horsepower in 2009). The diesel-powered Duramax powerplant remained optional on the Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD. In reaction the Ford Super Duty increased diesel power, the 6.6-liter Duramax V-8 engine performance was hiked to 397 horsepower and 765 pounds feet of torque in 2011.
