New and Used Cobalt Prices, Chevrolet Cobalt Model Years and History

In 2005, Chevrolet launched a new attempt at becoming an acclaimed player in the high-volume compact car segment. Replacing the Cavalier name after 23 years of use in the small car category, the Chevrolet Cobalt pitched itself as a more modern, refined compact vehicle. Designed to invoke a premium sensation, the Cobalt features an improved level of noise reduction and safety. The Chevrolet Cobalt was offered as either a two-door coupe or a four-door sedan. Air conditioning, AM/FM stereo with CD player and tilt steering column was standard base equipment. Power for the base, LS and LT trim level versions of the 2005 Cobalt arrived from a 2.2-liter Ecotec four-cylinder engine generating 145 horsepower.

 

The 2.2-liter engine remained the powerplant for the Chevrolet Cobalt throughout its run but was boosted up to 155 horsepower during the 2009 model year. Customers could choose to mate either a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic transmission with the naturally aspirated Ecotec engine. Available only as a coupe, a Cobalt SS Supercharged model pushes the compact performance envelope. Propelled by a supercharged 2.0-liter Ecotec engine, the Chevrolet Cobalt SS Supercharged model launches with the force of 205 horsepower. In 2006, a naturally aspirated Chevrolet Cobalt SS featuring a 171-horsepower, 2.4-liter Ecotec engine with variable valve timing was added to the line-up. 17-inch wheels and a performance-tuned suspension were also included on the 2006 Cobalt SS.

 

This model was rebranded as the 2008 Cobalt Sport. Also in 2008, head curtain airbags and XM satellite radio was added to the standard features list on all models. Absent from the 2008 line-up, the Chevrolet Cobalt SS returned in 2009 as both a coupe and sedan. The 2009 Cobalt SS was propelled through a turbocharged 2.0-liter Ecotec engine producing 260 horsepower. After 2010, the compact Cruze replaced the Chevrolet Cobalt.
