The Chevrolet Caprice had a distinguished career as a law reinforcement vehicle during the 1980s and 1990s. When General Motors discontinued the large rear-wheel Caprice after 1996, Chevrolet spent years trying to win favor of police departments with products that never provided the complete package of power and toughness. Realizing the legacy of the Caprice, the sedan returned as an offering for law enforcement. Based on a four-door sedan originally created by General Motors’ Australian brand Holden, the Chevrolet Caprice Police Patrol Vehicle was introduced in the United States in 2011. Immediately offered with a 6.0-liter V-8 delivering 355 horsepower and 384 pound-feet of torque to the rear wheels, a six-cylinder option was added for the 2012 model year. The 3.6-liter V-6 engine offered on the 2012 Caprice Police Petrol Vehicle produced 301 horsepower while providing improved fuel economy over the eight-cylinder powerplant. Both powerplants were mated with a six-speed automatic transmission. Planted on the road with a heavy-duty suspension, the car is also configured with a stability control system specifically tuned for police use. Integrated to withstand years of stressful service, the Chevrolet Caprice Police Petrol Vehicle was equipped with a number of features beneficial to law enforcement. High-output alternator, in-dash touch-screen computer compatibility and front seats designed for an officer’s belt are some of the items specially built into the Chevrolet police vehicle. In the trunk of the sedan, there would be a pair of batteries with one dedicated to running accessories such as the light bar and the on-board police computer. From 2011 to 2014, the Chevrolet Caprice Police Petrol Vehicle has received a number of equipment updates including the Bluetooth and Chevrolet MyLink infotainment system.
