The S4 name was a member in the European Audi line-up since 1991, but wasn‘t available in the United States until the 2000 model year. A sport-oriented version of the A4, the Audi S4 was introduced as a four-door sedan powered by a 250-horsepower, twin-turbocharged 2.8-liter V-6 engine and quattro all-wheel drive. 60 horsepower stronger six-cylinder A4, the 2000 Audi S4 was also appointed with premium equipment such as heated seats, cruise control and HID headlamps.
After its debut year in the United States, the Audi S4 sports sedan was joined by a wagon in 2001. For the 2004 model year, the Audi S4 received a major redesign and reengineering. A Cabriolet version of the Audi S4 was added alongside the sedan and wagon. The all-new look of the 2004 Audi S4 was accompanied by a 4.2-liter V-8 engine generating 350 horsepower. A six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission was mated with the 2004 Audi S4. Recaro seats and aluminum trim was included inside the 2004 Audi S4. From 2004 to 2008, the Audi S4 presented in three separate body styles remained largely unchanged. After a 2009 model year where only an Audi S4 Cabriolet was offered, the S4 was refreshed in 2010.
Returning to a six-cylinder engine, the 2010 Audi S4 received a 333-horsepower, supercharged TFSI 3.0-liter V-6. A seven-speed S tronic automatic transmission was an alternative to the standard six-speed manual gearbox. Acceleration time from 0 to 60 miles per hour with the 333-horsepower Audi S4 has been rated at 4.9 seconds. The 2013 Audi S4 was treated to a brand’s more detailed “Singleframe” grille and resigned headlights.
