Audi A3 Sportback e-tron Models and A3 Sportback e-tron History
Following years of teasing audiences of auto shows with electrified vehicles wearing the e-tron moniker, Audi applied the brand into production through the A3 lineup. A plug-in electric/gasoline powered compact car, the Audi A3 Sportback e-tron arrived in late 2015 as a 2016 model. Operating from an 8.8-kWh lithium-ion battery pack, a 102-horsepower liquid-cooled three-phase AC electric motor/generator provides primary momentum for the A3 Sportback e-tron. Able to drive up to 16 miles on electric power alone, a gasoline-fueled, 1.4-liter turbocharged FSI engine is used for extended travel distances. Driving mode selection also allows motorists to define how they wish to utilize both powerplants of the A3 Sportback e-tron. Unique to the e-tron version of the Audi A3 is the hatchback-style Sportback body appearance. Differentiating the vehicle from the other A3 models sold in the United States, the Sportback's cabin provides 13.6 cubic feet of cargo capacity in addition to room for five occupants. With the plug-in hybrid A3 Sportback e-tron, Audi installed an electric air conditioner compressor that can cool the interior compartment when the gasoline engine is not running.
