Competitive comparison

Tough, yet luxurious styling; brawny engines; fuel-efficient BlueTec diesel; smooth ride; three rows of seating; leading-edge safety-tech features

Special features for 2016

The Mercedes-Benz GL-Class is a step larger and roomier than most other luxury crossovers as it has three rows of usable seating, but it does compete directly with a set of vehicles that includes the Audi Q7 and Infiniti QX56, as well as the Cadillac Escalade. Among these, the GL-Class stands out for being less truck-like in look and feel, with a more refined ride. The set of luxury features on offer in the GL-Class is also stronger than most in this class, with some of the same advanced-tech items that wow in Mercedes-Benz' S-Class flagship. The fuel-efficient, clean-diesel GL350 BlueTec is a major highlight. It manages to get up to 26 mpg yet with little performance penalty.
The seven-passenger Mercedes-Benz GL-Class SUV is loaded with features and is available in four trim levels. The base trim level offers: air suspension (self-leveling), 19” premium alloy wheels, automated headlamps, LED tail lamps, LED daytime running lights, automated windshield wipers, roof rack and roof rails, privacy glass in the rear, powered rear liftgate, powered rear quarter windows, two-zone climate control, faux leather upholstery, powered and heated front seating, powered third row seating with folding, rear cargo area with cover, the COMMAND interface with 7” touchscreen, parking camera, Bluetooth/iPod/USB integration, standard 115-volt power outlet, rear DVD player and HD radio. Upgrades can add power-folding side mirrors, leather upholstery, remote entry/start, heated and cooled cup holders, bi-xenon headlamps, up to 21” alloy wheels, collision mitigation system, triple-zone climate control, 14-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system, parking assistance system, soft-closing doors and much more. Driving the GL class is an upgradable 3.0-liter turbocharged diesel V6 engine that makes 240 horsepower and 455 pound-feet of torque.
