The 2011 Mazda RX-8 is a RWD 4-door sports "coupe” powered by a RENISIS 1.3-liter rotary engine that produces 232 hp and 159 lb-ft of torque. This versatile sports car is available in two transmissions; 6-speed short-throw shifter manual or 6-speed automatic equipped with paddle shifters. The rotary engine allows an impressive redline of 9000 rpm with the manual transmission however suffers as far as fuel economy is concerned with an EPA estimated 16 mpg city and 22 mpg highway. A unique characteristic of the RX-8 is its clamshell door design that gives it the sporty appeal of a coupe and the convenience of a sedan. For those who have a real need for speed, the R3 trim level delivers a motorsport-inspired package including 19-inch forged aluminum-alloy wheels, performance-tuned suspension, Bilstein® shock absorbers, and Recaro® front sport leather. The RX-8 comes standard with front, front side-impact, and side-impact air bags. Other standard safety features include a collapsible steering column and ABS. The RX-8 is eligible for an extended protection plan up to 10 years/100,000 miles.
