Suzuki enters the midsize-pickup truck segment with the brand-new 2009 Suzuki Equator that is available in either extended- or crew-cab styles and with either short or long beds as well as two- or four-wheel drive. The 2.5L inline four-cylinder engine produces 152 hp and 171 lb-ft of torque that gets 19 mpg city/23 hwy with the five-speed manual transmission or 17/22 mpg with the five-speed automatic. Also available is a 4.0L V6 engine grinding out 261 hp and 281 lb-ft of torque, which gets 15/20 mpg with the mandatory automatic transmission, except the 4WD crew cab gets only 15/19 mpg. The crew cab is equipped with four doors and accommodates five passengers, while the extended cab is two-door and seats four. Among the Suzuki Equator safety features are driver and front-passenger dual-stage airbags, roof-mounted curtain side-impact and rollover airbags, front seat-mounted side impact supplemental airbags and four-wheel antilock disc brakes.
