While the overall length of the Mountaineer is the same as the previous generation model, the more sophisticated looking 2002 model rides in a more than two-inch longer wheelbase. A new five-speed automatic transmission now connects to the V-6 and V-8 engines found on the Mercury Mountaineer. For 2002, the Mercury Cougar remembers its pony car roots with a 35th anniversary package. A Jack Roush supplied rear spoiler and hood featuring a striking air scoop joined by 17-inch wheels as well as unique Cougar 35th Anniversary package badging. Prominence of the Grand Marquis is enhanced for 2002. Heated exterior mirrors, anti-lock braking system and traction control is now standard on the large sedan.
