Early in Hyundai's entry into the North America, the Sonata gained recognition as the brand's pivotal family sedan. For a smaller, economy-oriented sedan, the Hyundai Elantra is also a veteran in the marketplace. In the late 1990s, a new addition to Hyundai's sedan line-up presented an extra level of front-wheel drive refinement. First called the XG300 and later the XG350, the vehicle was eventually known as the Hyundai Azera. With the debut of the rear-wheel drive Genesis sedan, Hyundai has been forging ahead in an effort to compete against premium sport sedans from luxury car companies such as BMW and Lexus. Hyundai's efforts for capturing a piece of the luxury sedan market in North America also include the eight-cylinder powered, rear-wheel drive Equus featuring high-end touches such as heated rear seating and hands-free Smart Trunk.
