Arriving as a production model two years after the CL-X concept car gave a glimpse of a premium two-door sport coupe, the 1997 Acura CL was a monumental vehicle for the luxury brand's involvement in the United States. Designed and developed in America, the CL accompanied the TL sedan as the first Acura vehicles to be manufactured at Honda's Marysville, Ohio production plant. Four-wheel disc brakes with anti-lock braking system, 16-inch wheels, leather-wrapped steering wheel and automatic climate control were standard on the coupe. Propelled through the sophistication of VTEC technology, the 1997 Acura CL debuted with a 2.2-liter four-cylinder and 3.0-liter V-6 powerplant. The following year, a 2.3CL equipped with a larger, more potent four-cylinder engine served as the base powerplant. Leather seating became standard on all Acura CL models starting in 1999 ahead of a 2001 redesign of the CL. Touting a refreshed exterior, larger dimensions and improved technology, the 2001 Acura CL included a Type S version generating 260 horsepower from a 3.2-liter V-6 engine. Acura dropped the CL sport coupe after the 2003 model year.
