The founder of the Oldsmobile brand, Ransom E. Olds, was also noted for influencing the truck industry in the early era of the automobile. Some of this heritage was recalled in the 1990s when the brand began selling its first sport utility vehicle. Developed exclusively for the United States market, the Oldsmobile Bravada shared its platform with the Chevrolet Blazer but incorporated unique styling. Only offered as a four-door, the premium-appointed Bravada included anti-lock braking system. The first and redesigned second generation Bravada introduced in 1996 were only offered with all-wheel drive. A third redesign of the Bravada is historic for being the final new vehicle to be introduced by the Oldsmobile brand prior to its shuttering in 2004. The Oldsmobile Bravada will be remembered at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway as the first sport utility vehicle to serve as pace car at the Indy 500.
