The 2009 Cadillac Escalade Hybrid is an attempt to blend the upscale luxury SUV world with the current demand for more fuel efficient cars. The Escalade Hybrid utilizes GM's fuel-saving 2-mode Hybrid system which helps the Escalade earn a 45% improvement in fuel economy in city driving over the traditional Cadillac Escalade. The 6.0L V8 works in conjunction with the electrically variable transmission and 300V nickel-metal hydride energy storage system (ESS). The hybrid system allows the Escalade to drive at low speeds on electricity alone in addition to allowing the V8 to run on a more economical 4-cyl mode when necessary. The 2009 Escalade Hybrid is available in 2WD and 4WD configurations. All of the Escalade's standard comfort and convenience features are included, such as an eight-inch touch screen nav-system that also displays readouts of the 2-mode Hybrid system. Some will balk at the notion of a hybrid that "only" gets 20 mpg, but how many hybrids can tow a boat while its occupants ride in style and comfort? Not even the uber-green car, the Toyota Prius, can make a claim like that. |
