First appearing with the Dodge brand back in 1966, the Charger name represented one of the most iconic vehicles of the muscle car era. For the 2006 model year, Dodge revived the Charger nameplate for an all-new time and purpose with a four-door sedan.

Unlike the Intrepid it replaced, the Dodge Charger was rear-wheel drive and offered a V-8 powerplant option (Dodges first car to be powered by an eight-cylinder engine since the Diplomat in 1989). Defined as a two-door product for prior to 2006, the return of the Dodge Charger in the 21st century stood as a bold attempt to invoke enthusiasm in their full-sized sedan.

A 2.7-liter V-6 engine powered the base Charger SE while the SXT model featured a 250-horsepower 3.5-liter High Output powerplant. Features found at the base level of the 2006 Charger line-up included air conditioning, four-wheel disc brakes, keyless entry and a CD player. A 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 engine generating up to 368 horsepower powered the R/T and R/T Daytona models of the 2006 Dodge Charger. As the top-rated performance version of the four-door Charger, the SRT-8 received a 6.1-liter producing 425 horsepower.

Besides general customers, the rear-wheel drive Charger was also favorably received by law enforcement as many North American police departments have placed the four-door Dodge in their vehicle fleet. In 2007, an all-wheel drive version of the Charger was offered with the SXT and R/T trim levels.

Also in 2007, a Super Bee variant Charger SRT-8 was inaugurated as a special appearance, limited edition model with unique paint and decals. In 2011, a 292-horsepower 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 replaced the both six-cylinder engines previously included with the Charger. For the 2015 model year, the Dodge Charger received a styling facelift at the front and the rear.
