Custom Road Test Review: STILLEN Mustang GT

STILLEN Mustang GT

It is nice to have good neighbors. For example, STILLEN who is right down the street  built the amazing Ford GT that competed in the Dunlop Targa Rally in New Zealand. NADAguides.com was a proud sponsor of that vehicle as well as their current project involving the building of a GT-R which will compete in the upcoming Targa Newfoundland. As I said, they are good neighbors, but I didn’t realize how good until they handed me the keys to their Mustang GT that was built for the 2007 SEMA show. Aw shucks STILLEN… you guys are the best!

STILLEN Mustang GT

420 rear-wheel horsepower. Let me repeat that at least one more time. This STILLEN Mustang produces four-hundred and twenty horsepower at the rear wheels. A stock 2007 Ford Mustang GT is no slouch on power, with 300 ponies on tap, but STILLEN takes this baseline and adds more power than a Kia Rio produces in total.

This jump comes from the Magnuson intercooled supercharger and the STILLEN axle-back exhaust system. The most amazing part isn’t the power jump, but just how civil the car feels when driven at normal speeds. The exhaust system doesn’t overpower the senses and the whine of the supercharger is barely audible. The car feels like a normal Mustang GT. Things change quickly however once the gas pedal is pushed to the carpet. The supercharger that was barely audible turns up the volume to a level that would make Mad Max and the last of the V8 Interceptors very jealous. The exhaust opens up and booms with what I am led to believe is the wailing of the displaced soul of a Tyrannosaurus Rex. When these two sounds, the supercharger and the exhaust, are hitting together the experience is truly sublime. Needless to say, it is hard to keep that go pedal out of the floor, because I don’t want the noise to go away.

STILLEN Mustang GT

The interior of the STILLEN Mustang receives a few billet trim touches to the door handles, A/C knobs, the shifter bezel, and even the cup holder. The seats are fitted with custom Katzkin leather and suede that are quite comfortable. They also have a STILLEN logo stitched into the seats.

If I felt like covering the noise of the exhaust for awhile I could turn on the Sony double-din head-unit which featured a 7” touch-screen LCD. 8 speakers, three amps and an iPod connection round out the system but to be honest, I hardly used it. It sounded great when I did, but the exhaust and supercharger won out over Jay-Z and Pearl Jam.

STILLEN Mustang GT

I want to say thank you to the team over at STILLEN, not just for handing me the keys to their special STILLEN Mustang, but to making us proud each time they head out to a new race wearing our NADAguides logo on the side.

Also, if you need me to test drive that new GT-R… I am available.

They earn points for not putting giant logos all over the car.

I'd order mine without the body kit, but that's just me.
