Road Test Review: 2008 Volkswagen Touareg 2 V10 TDI Twin Turbo

Posted by Jeff Glucker on Tuesday, October 28, 2008 7:42 AM
The 2008 VW Touareg 2 V10 TDI may just be the most fun you can have in a Volkswagen.

I will be honest here, when I knew I was getting this car (especially after turning in the keys to the Audi S5) I did not think I would be in for much. I approached this 2008 Volkswagen Touareg 2 with low expectation. We're talking Beverly Hills Chihuahua low expectations here.

Sure, it has a 5.0L 310-hp V10 twin turbo diesel engine, and that seems interesting, but I wasn't sure it would be enough to propel this 5,800-lb+ behemoth along with any sense of urgency. Perhaps I was a bit hasty when reading the specs on this VW Touareg because I should have focused more on the torque...all 553 lb-ft of it.

The VW Touareg is like a never-ending surprise party, where you have a smile on your face the entire time.

The 2008 VW Touareg comes standard with the 4XMOTION permanent 4WD system. Combine that with the Electronic Stabilization Program (ESP), 4-corner air suspension with electronic shock absorbers, Electronic Differential Lock (EDL), center differential lock, optional rear differential lock, the 6-speed automatic Tiptronic(R) transmission, and the Anti-Slip Regulation (ASR)--this car, in addition to being a perfect discussion tool on Sesame Street, thanks to all those abbreviations--is made to get up and go. I have never driven such a heavy vehicle that feels so willing and comfortable to be pushed as hard as I pushed this Touareg, that is until Bentley decides to return my phone calls and provides me with something just as heavy and much faster...

The acceleration and power are certainly epic, but coupled with that is the sound from the engine as both turbos squeal in delight. As you push your toes deeper into the gas pedal, the sound gets louder and better. It is not only fun at speed however, as the vehicle is extremely easy when meandering around town. The 19" alloy wheels, fitted with 275/45/R19 all-season tires, provide the Touareg with a sure foot underneath its large size. This, in addition to the standard ABS, Engine Braking Assist, and Hydraulic Brake Assist, help keep you comfortable and confident as you maneuver around (and over?) the crowd. When you are driving in the city, you can expect gas mileage in the 15-mpg range (20 mpg hwy, if you have a light foot).

Put the air suspension into "SPORT" and the 5,800-lb+ Touareg stays low and nimble-ish.

Once you get tired of flooring the Touareg from light to light (and you may never), you can start to get a feel for the various comfort and convenience options that abound inside this VW. The car I drove came equipped with the Lux Plus package which includes keyless start/stop, Dynaudio, and a very nice 4-zone climate control system, as well as heated rear seats (heated front seats are standard). The car also came equipped with the Technologie package which features a DVD-based navigation with Sound Upgrade, a rear-view back-up camera, a 6-disc trunk mounted CD changer, and an auxiliary audio input jack. The sound system is great and the rear-view camera comes in handy when you use it in coordination with the Park Distance Control system.

I think you can gather that I really enjoyed my time in the VW Touareg. The one point I keep coming back to, as far as a reason not to buy the Touareg is the price. The MSRP for this VW is $68,340.00. The one I am driving, as equipped, is a mind-blowing $79,080.00. That is a few thousand dollars more than the Corvette Z06 I tested a couple of weeks ago! I think the problem I have here is simply based on the badge this vehicle wears. If you called this an Audi Q7 V10 TDI it would be a good deal, and if you called it a Porsche Cayenne V10 TDI, it would be considered a steal. It is just as comfortable...and more than powerful enough...to keep up with that crowd, but most people will be turned off by the big V W in the grille. This is sad because they are missing out on an amazing vehicle.

How amazing? Can your Porsche or Audi tow a 747 Jumbo Jet? Watch this:

Someone I know just turned in the lease on his Tourag and boy was that a comfy drive! I will miss going to lunch in that vehicle!

Those are surprisingly DISGUSTING fuel economy numbers... I guess this would be a sensible application of a cylinder deactivation system...

And the weight.. again, holy Tom Selleck's mustache, that thing is more portly than an AWD Escalade??? It doesn't make sense!

Thoughts on both of these blatant issues?

Jeff Glucker 10/28/2008 3:27 PM

@peabody 3684:

You are correct, the fuel economy is poor for a diesel fueled vehicle but not for the power numbers this Touareg puts out. If you compare it to a TDI Jetta, sure it is terrible... but a Jetta is not going to make over 550 lb-ft of torque.

The weight, again it is a large number but this helps offset the balast needed for larger towing applications.

Perhaps a solution is to lighten the load and employ the more cost-effective 3.0L TDI being offered in the 2009 Q7, which hits that magical 30mpg nubmer (magical for an SUV...) but then you lose over 100 lb-ft of torque and lots of the fun. This Touareg is ridiculous, expensive, gets bad mpg, and I love it...

peabody3684 10/28/2008 3:47 PM

@Jeff: so then your thoughts are that they fully intended this application to be desirable and consumed by people needing the towing prowess, which validates the issues I mentioned before??

I'm having a hard time piecing this together... Audi and VW are rather smart makes... yet even factoring in the Diesel acceptance of Europe... this still doesn't click, I don't think towing at all when thinking of Euro car use... I don't know why it's sticking in my craw so much, but I am having a hard time justifying the vehicle...

Admittedly I felt this way about the Phaeton, so maybe it is the VW on the grill... but even thinking of it being the Q7... initial thought is, a V10 TDI in an Audi makes more sense, as they are all about performance that changes your life and how you view the world... but the weight factor just kills any rationale I start towards.

Plus the 5 year ownership costs... six figures in CA! Audis I've noticed, when I have looked at the ownership costs, are a bear on depreciation to begin with, this drops $20K first year, OUCH!

Jeff Glucker 10/28/2008 4:00 PM

@peabody3684: see... you are bringing logic into the equation and that has to be thrown out the window for this vehicle to make sense. The typical owner of a 5-th wheel or travel trailer is not in the market for a VW SUV, at least here in the United States. This car makes no sense here, and that is why no one is buying it... they even make a performance R50 for Europe which bumps horsepower to around 500, but will never see the light of day here. The Euros must be doing something with it to justify a version like that.

This $80,000 VW SUV is absurd... but it is capable, comfortable, powerful, and useful. If there is a fairly successful person out there who wants a "stupid-fun" SUV and doesn't care what it says on the grill, this is their car. It won't put you into a situation you shouldn't enter (a la the Cayenne and the fact that it thinks it is a race car) because you know it is a big diesel...

Again (just like the Phaeton) this vehicle makes little to no sense, but I can't help but fall in love with it after my time behind the wheel.

(such a smarty pants to mention the 5-yr COO by the way... look at you go!)

peabody3684 10/28/2008 5:19 PM

@Jeff: Yea, I got all pantie bunched, because I cry Diesel from the mountain tops and it hit me while reading, how putrid the numbers on this are and it hurt me deep inside, as I never thought they'd be that bad!

Anyway... I'd have it if I could really, gotta get my Jumbo Jet from A to B somehow and warm my buttocks whilst doing so!

COO doesn't sit that well with me either but in reference it fit but thanks! *blushes and giggles like Japanese school girl* This is getting weird bro, I'm out!

HA

I can't believe you actually went to see Beverly Hills Chihuahua.

Jeff Glucker 10/29/2008 2:56 PM

@eagleone70:

i did not but judging by the money they made at the box office, many others did...

Aaron Gold 11/6/2008 8:21 AM

The fuel economy numbers seem pretty nutsy (I tested one of these for my own site and I averaged around 17 or 18, if memory serves) -- but consider that the V8-powered Touareg gets around 12 MPG and isn't as quick. To get this kind of acceleration out of a gasoline motor, you're probably talking 8 MPG. The Touareg may not be big, but it's dense... lots of heavy bits packed into that small shadow. I've driven Touaregs on-road and off-road, and it does both equally well -- another rarity. Me, I agree with Jeff, I had a***** of a good time in the Touareg TDI. But a Passat 2.0T wagon hauls just as much stuff and uses a lot less fuel. I usually drive on the pavement, anyway...

Aaron Gold 11/6/2008 8:24 AM

@Peabody3684: Bear in mind that the VW Group is trying to reposition the Volkswagen brand as a luxury marque to go up against Mercedes. That works in Europe, where they also own Skoda (inexpensive) and Seat (sporty). Here in the US, the VW brand perception is very different... more like Seat. Hence the lack of acceptance of the Phaeton. Shame, it was a***** of a car. If you ask me, VW ought to just stick to the "Driver's Wanted" stuff here in the states and keep going after the Apple Mac demographic. But no one asked me, so...

Jeff Glucker 11/6/2008 9:24 AM

@Aaron Gold:

Good point about the diesel vs gas-engine... it would put this Touareg into H1/H2 territor, in terms of consumption.

I am eager to test the other TDI offerings from VW, as I would imagine they are also quite fun and much more practical for everyday use.
