It seems like it's been forever since General Motors (GM) said it was going to bring back the Chevy Camaro, and now it has finally unveiled the production version of the car, which is captured on GMtv video.
The 2010 Chevy Camaro (shown here) will mark the return of the Camaro since 2002.
Though car enthusiasts have long been talking about its return since the 2002 Camaro bit the dust, today's high gas prices make the idea of owning a big, brawny American muscle car less appealing than before. The good news is that the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro will be offered with two engines, both of which get pretty good gas mileage considering their power. GM Chairman Bob Lutz told the public recently on GM's FastLane Blog that "The goal all along was to build (the Camaro) with the best fuel economy we could possibly get, even before energy prices took their meteoric rise."
According to GM, the 2010 Chevy Camaro LS and LT models, equipped with the 300-horsepower, 3.6-liter V6 engine and the six-speed manual transmission, will get 26 mpg on the highway. If you're like many American muscle car enthusiasts, you wouldn't consider going for the smaller V6 engine when there's a 6.2-liter V8 available, but lucky for you, the gas mileage is still respectable even with eight bangers under the hood.
Highway gas mileage of 23 or 26 mg will sound good to American muscle car enthusiasts.
The V8 in the Camaro SS will be offered with a six-speed automatic transmission and GM's Active Fuel Management system, allowing it to run on four cylinders when extra power isn't needed, such as during highway cruising. In this configuration, the V8 produces 400 horsepower and 395 lb-ft of torque. For those who want to go all out, the 6.2-liter V8 will also be offered sans the Active Fuel Management system and paired with a six-speed manual transmission to produce 422 horsepower and 408 lb-ft of torque. The V8 will get 23 mpg on the highway, according to GM's estimates, which is in line with its chief competitor, the 425-horsepower 2009 Dodge Challenger SRT8, which has an EPA-estimated fuel economy of 14 city/22 highway.
