Road Test Review: 2009 Saturn Sky Redline

Posted by Jeff Glucker on Wednesday, November 26, 2008 8:58 AM

2009 Saturn Sky Redline top down
The 2009 Saturn Sky Redline is a small package with a big punch.

Have you ever wondered what would happen if a Cadillac XLR and a Chevrolet Corvette got married and had a car baby? No? Just me then… Well, if it happens then the result would be a 2009 Saturn Sky Redline. A two-seat, turbocharged, rear-wheel-drive roadster sure sounds like a fun package, but can Saturn really deliver in this area when they are known more for reliable and safe sedans? Yes they can.

2009 Saturn Sky Redline
This particular Saturn Sky Redline is clearly an exhibitionist.

A limited edition noted by the Ruby Red with Black Stripe paint scheme, the 2009 Saturn Sky Redline is a two-door, two-seat soft-top convertible that is a blast to drive. The curb weight for the car is 2,990 lbs which helps the 260-hp 2.0L turbocharged inline 4-cylinder engine propel the Sky along quite quickly. 0 to 60 mph happens in just 5.5 seconds and the Saturn Sky can run the quarter-mile in under 14 seconds.

Though I would have preferred the 5-speed manual, my Sky was equipped with the optional 5-speed automatic and I was surprised at how well it managed to keep the excitement level up. Turn off the traction control, punch the throttle and the Saturn Sky is like a puppy…it just wants to make you happy and it won't get tired no matter how long you play with it.

2009 Saturn Sky Redline interior
The interior of the Saturn Sky is basic but useful which is all you need in a sporty roadster.

The 2009 Saturn Sky has an interior that is useful without throwing too much information and technology at you. This is a sports car that wants to be driven. You don't have to fuss around with a navigation system or other tech gadgets that only get in the way of what is important – driving the car, hard. This is not a large car, and if it were a few inches shorter on the inside I would not be able to sit comfortably, so if you are around 6'3" take note of this. I was comfortable driving this car on a daily basis for a week, but near the end of our time together my back did start to ache a bit. If you are shorter than I am, you should have no problems though.

With the top up, road noise is minimal and there is plenty of head room. Blind spots become quickly evident with the humongous rear pillars created by the top. The rear window is large enough to be useful and the side mirrors do their best to see over the high, creased rear fenders. To truly enjoy this car, however, you will drive it with the top down. Once you put the top away, realize that the trunk is now effectively useless. There is room for the top and nothing more. With the top up, you could fit two weekend bags in the trunk, but you are pushing it.

A 2009 Saturn Sky Redline Ruby Red Limited Edition starts around $33,730 (the regular Saturn Sky Redline starts around $31,000), but with the 5-speed automatic adding $995 and the upgraded stereo counting for another $690, you will soon be over the $35K mark. However, that is a small price to pay for the open-air thrill that this Saturn delivers. The Sky Redline is best suited to be a second option or a warm-weather weekend car, due to its small size and lack of storage. If you do use this car as a daily driver, it will be hard to stay off the gas and hit the estimated 21 mpg city/29 mpg highway, as I was only able to achieve 17.5 mpg.

As I said at the beginning, the 2009 Saturn Sky Redline is a blend of the style and performance of the Chevrolet Corvette and the Cadillac XLR. At a price under $40,000, that is a quite a deal.

And you get the steering wheel from a ZR-1??? That is a deal!

That is a surprising cool output from Saturn. Not bad.

Joe Bianco 12/8/2008 12:57 PM

I still want to know how to apply for your job, here on the right coast

Jeff Glucker 12/15/2008 10:23 AM

@Joe Bianco:

It is just one of those "right place, right time" sort of stories...

Mr. Bean 4/2/2009 12:31 PM

I have a 2008 Chili pepper red redline and he had to be seriously leaning into it. I get average 30 mpg as a commuter vehicle and about 25 average if I get the tail wagging alot. In addition this is not a car for introverts everyone wants to talk to you about it and it will put a serious grin on your face when you turn off the electronic nannies.

Meanie 4/22/2009 12:28 PM

As opposed to Mr. Bean, I drive my 2008 Sky RL on a nearly daily basis and nobody talks to me about my car, perhaps I am just too mean and serious looking. Anyway, mine is upgraded significantly and is a kick in the pants to drive, not many cars on the street able to stay with it in 0-60, with the upgrades and some modifying the 0-60 is at a flat 4.0 seconds. Of course GM doesn't want many people to know what this car is capable of otherwise they would not be able to sell their regular Corvette at a much higher price. As is, even upgraded the computer limits turbo boost to a 24 psi max without throwing a code, though I have seen it hit 26 before the computer shut it down.

Meanie 4/22/2009 12:31 PM

Should give the stock boost as well: stock boost will be at 17, 18 or 19 depending upon how far over the factory sets the wastegate and of course altitude and temperature.

I've got an '08 RedLine and it's quite a car. Having owned two Corvettes ('66 427 convertible and '70 smallblock coupe), a 1996 LT1 Impala SS, a 2000 LS1 TransAm convertible and a 2006 LS2 GTO I can say that, even though I've been raised on a steady diet of high performance V8s, this 2.0 liter has convinced me of its performance chops. Scary fast, torque all day long from down low, sticks like a tick on a dog and 25 MPG when I beat it to death. Amazing.

Jeff Glucker 5/13/2009 1:54 PM

Great stuff guys - the car was a blast to drive and it really is a baby Corvette, until you play around with it as MrMeanie did and turn it into a Vette beater of course.

Rhino 9/17/2009 7:13 PM

This comment is for Meanie. Besides the normal after market upgrades, intake, exhaust..., how and where did you find out how to upgrade the limits to the computers turbo boost. That is awesome and I would like to make it happen. Any help in that direction would be appreciated.

Great review Jeff! I have a 2008 Solstice GXP and I just love the car! It is a small corvette! The sky look's like the new corvettes and the Solstice look's like the old corvettes. With a BSR Tune from Hahn racecraft my GXP runs the 1/4 mile in 13.2 and 0-60 in 4.5

Jean Nance 11/19/2009 5:12 PM

I love my 2008 techno gray redline.

The loan suppose to be useful for guys, which would like to organize their own business. As a fact, that is very easy to receive a financial loan.
