Seen In SoCal: 1965 Chevrolet Impala

Posted by Jeff Glucker on Friday, November 07, 2008 9:06 AM

1965 Chevrolet Impala
This 1965 Chevy Impala still prowls the streets of Southern California, always ready for an impromptu sock hop or drive-in movie…

Driving through local Southern California neighborhoods, I come across a lot of classic American muscle cars. Every now and then I see one which makes me want to take a closer look. The color of this 1965 Chevrolet Impala caused me to swing my car around and talk to the owner, Doug Enfinger, just as he was finishing hosing off the car. Clearly a man who cares for his classic car, Doug agreed to  a few questions and some pictures of this beautiful, very green Impala, which Doug has lovingly named "The Dill."

1965 Chevrolet Impala rear
Mean, green, and not so lean…this Impala is a great piece of American automotive history.

Here is a little history on the car thanks to Doug:
"She was built at the South Gate, California, Chevy plant and somehow ended up in Ohio. The Impala was then bought and brought back home to California in the fall of 2006. This is the original color combo of the Willow Green exterior with the black Super Sport vinyl interior. The car has had only one known repaint. The wheels on the car are circa 1969 Rallye wheels which came on some of the Camaros and Vettes of the time. The 327 V8 engine has the original block and heads and was rebuilt last year for a more comfortable driving style to fit the speeds seen on the California highways. The Impala was purchased to be a daily driver so I wanted it to be ready for life here in SoCal. It has front and rear sway bars, and I added an Alpine head unit that is iPod compatible, as well as component speaker sets and a 15" JBL subwoofer. The whole system, which I designed myself, is setup to be non-intrusive to the interior style of the vehicle and can be removed and put back to stock if needed. The exhaust setup is the Dual Flowmaster Delta 40 series, so it sounds loud on the outside yet is nice and quiet on the inside, and both exhaust tips exit before the rear tires. I truly love this car as it is a joy to drive with my elbow out the window and my lady by my side. This car is a real SuperSport and not a clone. She has been my dream car for 15 years and I relish any chance to take her on road trips and show her off at local car shows."

I have to say, I am pretty jealous here…not just because Doug has a great Impala, but also because he somehow got his girlfriend to fall in love with classic cars as well. How is that even possible? My wife would look at this car and say "Too old, too loud and too cucumber green…" while I hear "…old…loud…cucumber green!"

Thanks for letting me take pictures of your car, Doug, and thanks for sharing your story!

This story reminded me of the few times I snuck out your great grandmothers 68 Chevy Caprice 327. Know I remember being terrified by how fast grandma used to drive.

Jeff Glucker 11/7/2008 11:24 AM

@Scott:

I wish we still had a car like that in the family... that would be lots of fun.

Lonny Sanchez 11/7/2008 12:10 PM

Not too many of those still around.....and in that condition.

peabody3684 11/7/2008 12:50 PM

Hey, Hey, handsome vehicle indeed!

Thanks for the write-up Jeff!
As far as the 68 Caprice that your father had, I know how you feel lamenting it being gone. My first car happened to be a 77 El Camino my deceased (when I was 3) WWII Vet grandfather owned. I never knew the man sadly, but having that ride and knowing he thought it worth owning (ElCos are polarizing) made me enjoy my time with it...

I have my sites on it for rebirth, it will rise again! Chrome "bedrails" and all!

Hey Jeff, depending on how the next few months shape up, SERIOUSLY, might take you up on the "babysitting" offer with Dill... needs to be ran!

Thanks again, everyone, let my car be example that with research, passion, and time you can make something just right for not too much!

@peabody3684: the pleasure was mine... you know my email address if you need a car babysitter...

Jeff,

My father purchased a new 1965 Impala, in the same color, with matching interior. If I remember correctly, I think it had that clear vinyl stuff on the seats that was dealer installed and kept the seats looking like new for the next owner. Never understood that concept?

In 1965, Chevrolet produced the Impala (the number one selling car in America that year) in three shades of green. The car that you show in the picture looks like an "HH" code, or Glen Green. There was also a "KK" code, Cypress Green, which had a touch more blue in the shade. And then the "JJ" code, or Willow Green, which was a much darker shade....

Thanks for the trip down memory lane....

@mark:

I'm the owner of the Impala and I*****ure you it is HH-Willow Green Metallic. The darker shade you are talking about, which IS similar, is called Laurel Green and was used on earlier years (I know someone with and all original 63 Impala SS (no repaint nothing) and we've discussed the colors at length. Laurel Green was more yellowy while my color has more silver/gray. Glen Green is GG code(kinda fitting, huh ;) ).

It never photographs well, sadly.

I didn't cuss, just forgot a space, hahaha that's funny!

Jeff Glucker 11/10/2008 9:30 AM

@mark: thanks for the insight and it was my pleasure to find the car and share it... the bit about the seats is pretty funny and I would've asked the dealer to remove that, haha.

@peabody3684: don't worry, we believe you... its your baby and you probably know how much foam padding is used to make the seats based on which factory the car came from.

Jeff, I have a to buy a 1965 Ford Thunderbird. In 1998 my friends Step-Father drove the T-Bird about 50 miles and when he got home he drove the Bird under a car-port next to the garage and never drove again. The body, tires, Chrome, Bumpers and the whole body is in good condition. The interior needs work. Please E-Mail me to see if you know what the car is worth.
Thank You,
