Introduced in 2004, the Touareg was an all-new midsized SUV offered by Volkswagen. It was created to provide smooth handling with capable off-roading features and plenty of interior amenities for city slickers. For 2005, the engine got a boost from 220 hp to 240 hp, and a self-dimming rearview mirror as well as new 18” alloy wheels became standard features. Aside from updates to optional packages, no changes were in store for 2006.
New engines were the theme of 2007, with a new V6 that got 36 more hp and a new V8 that delivered 40 more hp. Optional package updates could add xenon headlamps, iPod integration, powered rear liftgate and remote start. In 2008, the V8 engine was discontinued, and wood interior trim accents and Bluetooth integration were added as standard features.
In 2009, the Touareg was completely overhauled, offering new styling inside and out, better fuel economy and a more interior passenger space. 2010 would see no major changes, with new wheel and trim options and a beefed up 240 hp output in store for 2011. Only subtle changes were in store for 2012 and 2013, with new trims debuting for 2014.
A powerful premium SUV with seating for five, the 2005 Volkswagen Touareg is an AWD powerhouse available with a 280 hp V6, 340 hp V8 or a twin turbo diesel V10 which generates 310 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque while returning 23 mpg on the highway.
