The 1998 Nissan Maxima added an optional side-impact airbag safety feature to several trims in addition to a new color, Sterling Mist. Optional traction control as introduced in 1999, with subtle interior updates being made and four new body colors. An all-new design was unveiled for 2002, boasting more interior room and more features. The V6 engine got a power boost to 222 hp, and a new Bose 200-watt sound system was introduced. The 20th Anniversary was launched in 2001, offering a faster 220 hp V6 engine, and signature interior and exterior styling. In 2002, a revamped V6 engine was added, offering 255 hp.
Some minor shuffling between different trims and optional packages occurred. No major changes took place for 2003, but an all-new design was introduced in 2004. It was wider, longer and had more power under the hood than previous models. The 2005 Maxima offered a smoother transmission, upgraded (optional) leather seating and all-new chrome accents. For 2006, the audio controls on the steering wheel got backlights, and satellite radio, GPS and Bluetooth integration were now offered as available options. A CTV manual transmission debuted in 2007, alongside a reduced horsepower V6 that had ten fewer horses under the hood. While 2008 saw no changes, 2009 would introduce a completely redesigned Maxima with added luxurious features and more amenities.
Model years 2010-2011 saw only minor tweaks made to trims and packages. The 2012 version got a redesigned grille and taillights, as well as some minor updates to the interior. 2013 saw no notable changes. But 2014 saw standard features added that included a 7 touchscreen, USB inputs, a backup camera and xenon headlamps.
