Introduction

Completely redesigned for the first time since it originally debuted in 2006 for the 2007 model year, the 2016 Lincoln MKX continues to share a platform with the Ford Edge but benefits from strongly differentiated styling, packaging, and engineering. Don't look for a third-row seat, though. The MKX remains a 5-passenger crossover SUV, and will be offered in Premiere, Select, Reserve, and Black Label levels of specification when it goes on sale in the summer of 2015.

Exterior Features

Featuring Lincoln's latest design language, the new 2016 MKX resembles the automaker's smaller MKC crossover. It also shares the MKC's Welcome Mat system, which illuminates exterior and interior lighting as the driver approaches the vehicle. Aluminum wheels range in terms of size and finish, running from 18-in. wheels on the MKX Premiere to 20-in. wheels for the MKX Reserve.

Interior Features

Lincoln renders the MKX's interior in an upscale 2-tone treatment, and both Active Noise Control and laminated front window glass help contribute to a quiet and luxurious cabin. The latest version of Lincoln's touch-screen infotainment system is present, supported by traditional knobs and buttons for common radio and climate functions.

Optional Features

Among the numerous available upgrades for the MKX, premium leather, open pore wood trim, and a panoramic sunroof add another level of luxury to the cabin. Heated and ventilated front seats add comfort, as do 22-way power-adjustable front seats with Active Motion massage. Lincoln offers an embedded modem for easier connectivity for multiple devices, and the new hands-free power rear liftgate automatically powers open or closed by waving a foot under the rear bumper.

Lincoln also plans to offer four different limited-edition Lincoln Black Label designer themes that give the crossover SUV a bespoke nature. Existing themes called Indulgence and Modern Heritage will be available, as well as two new themes along the lines of Paris during the roaring '20s and the lifestyle associated with thoroughbred horse racing.

Under the Hood

A standard 3.7-liter V-6 engine generates 300 horsepower and 280 lb.-ft. of torque, while an optional twin-turbocharged, 2.7-liter, EcoBoost V-6 engine is expected to deliver more than 330 horsepower and 370 lb.-ft. of torque. A push-button 6-speed automatic transmission powers the MKX's front wheels, and an all-wheel-drive system is optional.

A continuously controlled damping suspension with Lincoln Drive Control will also be available, along with adaptive steering. Lincoln Drive Control tailors the MKX to Comfort, Normal, and Sport settings.

Safety

In addition to programmable vehicle features and an automatic connection to emergency services in the event of an air bag deployment (provided a smartphone is paired to the infotainment system), the new Lincoln MKX is available with a number of advanced safety technologies. Highlights include adaptive cruise control, pre-collision assist with automatic braking, blind-spot information system, lane-keeping system, and cross-traffic alert that works at both the front and back of the vehicle.

Technology

The 2016 MKX is the first Lincoln model to receive Revel premium sound systems, the result of a recent agreement between Lincoln and Harman. A 13-speaker version is offered for the MKX Select and MKX Reserve trim levels. A 19-speaker high-end audio system with QuantumLogic surround sound is optional for the MKX Reserve and standard for the MKX Black Label.

In addition to these new audio systems, the MKX is available with adaptive LED headlights and a new Auto Hold feature for the braking system. With Auto Hold, once the MKX is brought to a complete stop, the driver can release the brake pedal and the SUV won't move until he or she steps on the accelerator pedal.

Available park-assist technology autonomously steers the new MKX into parallel and perpendicular parking spaces while the driver operates the pedals and transmission. The system also supplies what Lincoln calls park-out assist to help with tricky situations that have developed while the driver was away from the vehicle.
