Introduction

The Ford Edge is a midsize crossover SUV with room for five. It's the more basic version of the Lincoln MKX, with which it shares a platform. The Edge is in its first generation, having been introduced for the 2006 model year. Its main competitors include the Kia Sorento, Toyota Venza, and Nissan Murano. The Edge received a new 4-cylinder EcoBoost engine in 2012, as an alternative to its standard V-6 power. For 2013, Ford has added four new metallic colors: Deep Impact Blue, Kodiak Brown, Mineral Grey, and Ruby Red. All-wheel drive (AWD), formerly offered only at the upper trim levels, is now available on all Edge models. The Ford Edge is available in the base SE trim, plus the SEL, Limited, and Sport trims.

Exterior Features

The 2013 Ford Edge features the maker's distinctive front grille treatment and sleek profile, and is offered in a choice of nine exterior colors. Standard are 17-inch alloy wheels; the SEL upgrades to 18-inch wheels plus exterior keypad entry. The Limited trim features 18-inch chrome wheels, heated mirrors, and many packaged or individual options. The Edge Sport has a sport-tuned suspension to go with its 22-inch wheels and upgraded exterior styling.

Interior Features

The base SE trim features cloth upholstery, cruise control, single-zone manual air conditioning, power accessories, 6-speaker sound system, reclining rear seats and adjustable driver's seat. The SEL trim upgrades the cloth upholstery and adds a leather-wrapped steering wheel with 5-way switch pads and secondary audio controls, plus dual-zone climate control, 8-way power driver's seat, ambient lighting, fold-down second-row seats, and a USB port. Leather upholstery is optional on the SEL trim (along with a fold-flat front passenger seat), but standard on the Limited trim, which also features a 10-way power driver's seat, 8-way power front passenger seat, heated front seats, and a 12-speaker sound system with HD Radio. The Edge Sport includes all of the SEL's standard and optional features, and adds special charcoal-black leather-trimmed seats. With the rear seats up, the Edge offers 32 cubic feet of cargo space; with the rear seats folded, 69 cubic feet are available.

Optional Features

Many individual options and packages are available for the Edge, at all trim levels. For the SE trim, the Convenience package adds a cargo organizer beneath the floor, automatic headlights, rear parking sensors, and auto-dimming rearview mirror. Optional on the SEL trim is the MyFord Touch electronics interface system, which includes a central touch screen plus two more screens in the instrument cluster and steering-wheel-mounted controls, and a turn-by-turn navigation system with traffic reports. A power liftgate is an individual option. An Appearance package further upgrades the optional leather seating and adds 20-inch wheels plus more daring exterior styling. The Limited trim offers the Driver Entry package, which includes remote ignition and the power liftgate, xenon headlights, adaptive cruise control, and a collision-warning system. A towing package, added safety features, panoramic sunroof, and a rear-seat entertainment system are other options.

Under the Hood

The 2013 Ford Edge offers three different engines, and a choice of front-wheel (FWD) or all-wheel drive (AWD). The standard model features a 3.5-liter V-6 engine rated at 285 horsepower and 253 lb.-ft. of torque. Available on all but the Sport trim is a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder EcoBoost engine rated at 240 horsepower and 270 lb.-ft. of torque, available only with front-wheel drive. The Edge Sport features a 3.7-liter V-6 engine rated at 305 horsepower and 280 lb.-ft. of torque. All engines are mated to a standard 6-speed automatic transmission.
