Mercedes-Benz C-Class models are typically well-equipped-even in base trim-and the new range-topping C63 AMG Coupe is no exception. Standard features include a full complement of power-operated convenience features, including power windows, power locks, cruise control, and dual-zone climate control.

Differentiating the C63 AMG Coupe from its standard siblings is a uniquely-shaped AMG performance steering wheel (shared with the CLS63 AMG) that has a race-inspired flat bottom and a grip area covered in perforated leather. The back of the steering wheel features aluminum shift paddles, to control the transmission gearing. Unique sport seats, with heavy bolstering to hold driver and front passenger in place during spirited driving, are also standard. The standard upholstery is a combination MB-Tex and "Dinamica" (a new type of breathable man-made fiber which is soft to the touch and is characterized by low emissions and high durability). Leather upholstery, in single- and two-tone colors, is optional.

Like its siblings, the C63 AMG Coupe arrives with several new technologies. These include Attention Assist (When the driver appears drowsy, the system sounds an audible and visible alert), Lane Keeping Assist (monitors where the vehicle is in relation to the stripes on the side of the road), Blind Spot Assist (monitors whether there is another vehicle in either side blind-spot), and Parktronic (uses high-frequency sound waves to alter the driver to obstacles in the vehicle's path at low speeds). An optional COMAND system (Cockpit Management and Data system) features a new generation of telematics that offers greater operating convenience, larger displays, phone book transfer, Bluetooth audio streaming, and a USB interface now accommodated in the center armrest, says Mercedes-Benz.

While passengers will immediately notice the interior AMG upgrades, those in traffic will also be able to identify the changes between the standard C-Class coupe and the new C63 AMG Coupe. The new model has a more aggressive front apron, with an AMG-inspired, high-gloss black horizontal edge and AMG LED daytime running lights and side air outlets.

The Mercedes-Benz three-pointed star is in the grille (just like it is in standard Sport C-Class models), and there is "6.3 AMG" scripting on each front quarter panel. At the rear, there is a distinctive apron, with a black diffuser insert and three lower fins between the chromed twin tailpipes of the AMG sport exhaust system.

Standard wheels on the C63 AMG Coupe are 18-inch AMG light-alloy wheels, finished in titanium gray with a high-gloss clear coat. Standard tires are 235/40R18 in the front, and 255/35R18 in the rear.

Suspension and Powerplant

Mercedes-Benz specially tuned the suspension of its new C63 AMG Coupe for its new role. Compared with the standard suspension in the C-Class sedans and coupe models, the AMG coupe has a separate three-link front suspension. It also features a reinforced multi-link independent rear suspension with a wider track front and rear (this design helps to improve cornering performance). The suspension bushings are harder (less flex means more responsive handling), and the alignment has been altered for additional negative camber. There are thicker anti-roll bars ,and spring/damper rates have optimized to improve responsiveness of the suspension as well as lower road noise and tire vibration, says the automaker.

The steering is a special AMG-tuned speed-sensitive sports system with a direct ratio to improve road feel. There is also a modified ESP (Electronic Stability Program) with three settings: ESP ON, ESP SPORT and ESP OFF modes - standard C-Class models do not have a defeatable stability control system. The AMG high-performance braking system is fitted with internally ventilated and perforated discs at all four corners to provide maximum braking effort and high fade resistance, according to Mercedes-Benz.

AMG performance is synonymous with powerful engines. Under the hood of the new C63 AMG Coupe is a 6.2-liter V-8 (Mercedes-Benz calls it a "6.3-liter") rated at 451 horsepower and 443 lb.-ft. of torque mated to a standard electronically controlled "AMG Speedshift" 7-speed automatic transmission.

According to the automaker, the C63 AMG Coupe will sprint to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds, with an electronically-limited top speed of 155 mph. Those seeking even more power will want to consider the "AMG Development Package," as it adds new lightweight forged pistons, forged connecting rods, forged crankshaft, and modified engine management. The end result is 481 horsepower.

The 2012 Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Coupe goes on sale in the fall of 2011.
