The 17-inch wheels are finished in Gunmetal Black. Xenon headlights illuminate the path forward.

Interior Features

Unique interior details for the new 2012 Mazda MX-5 Miata Special Edition include heated front seats wrapped in black leather and featuring contrast stitching, Piano Black cabin trim panels, and alloy pedals with studded rubber grips. As this model is based on the MX-5 Miata Grand Touring trim level, it includes additional features such as automatic climate control, Bose AudioPilot 2 premium sound system, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror with a HomeLink universal remote. It also comes with features that are optional on other MX-5 Miatas, such as Bluetooth hands-free calling and Mazda Advanced Keyless Entry and Start.

Optional Features

Aside from a choice of two exterior colors, the only option available for the new MX-5 Miata Special Edition is a 6-speed automatic transmission. Dealers can supply additional aftermarket accessories if desired.

Under the Hood

The new Miata Special Edition shares its powertrain with other MX-5 models. That means it is equipped with a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine making 167 horsepower, 6-speed manual gearbox, and rear-wheel drive. Opt for the available 6-speed automatic, and the Miata makes 158 horsepower. Premium unleaded fuel is required.

Fuel Economy

The 2012 Mazda MX-5 Miata Special Edition receives the following fuel economy ratings:
  • Models with 6-speed manual transmission: 22/28/25 mpg (city/hwy/combined)
  • Models with 6-speed automatic transmission: 21/28/24 mpg

Safety

All 2012 Mazda MX-5 Miata Special Editions are equipped with dual front air bags, dual side-impact air bags, 4-wheel-disc anti-lock brakes with brake assist, and stability and traction control. Neither the NHTSA nor the IIHS have conducted crash tests on this vehicle at the time this is written.
