Introduction

2011 Cadillac CTS CoupeOriginally introduced as a concept at the 2008 North American International (Detroit) Auto Show, Cadillac officially unveiled the production version of the 2011 CTS Coupe at the 2009 Los Angeles Auto Show. Virtually identical to the , the new CTS Coupe joins the established CTS Sedan and recently introduced , completing the model lineup and fully equipping the luxury automaker to challenge the likes of the BMW 3 Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class in the global market.

Like the CTS Sedan, which was redesigned for 2008, and the all-new CTS Sport Wagon, the new CTS Coupe features a crisp, aggressive exterior design. Available in rear- or all-wheel drive, the new CTS Coupe will initially be available exclusively with a 304-hp, 3.6-liter V-6 engine. This V-6 is coupled to a 6-speed manual transmission or a 6-speed automatic with driver shift control. A smaller-displacement turbo-diesel engine is said to be in development, likely to be found in vehicles marketed in other global markets and perhaps North America as well.

Scheduled to arrive in Cadillac showrooms in the spring of 2010, the all-new 2011 Cadillac CTS Coupe will be joined by a high-performance V-Series model sometime later in calendar 2010.

Design

The dramatic design of the all-new 2011 Cadillac CTS Coupe boasts a number of elements inspired by-and that look similar to-a precision-cut diamond. This is especially prevalent in the car's rear. Vertical taillamps and headlamps add to the car's forward-looking design. Cadillac says the design is "emotion on four wheels" and the "very essence of what defines Cadillac today."

Sharing only the instrument panel, headlamps, front fenders and grille with the CTS Sedan, the CTS Coupe offers its own unique design elements. These include no B-pillar in the classic hardtop styling; a windshield that's laid at a faster angle for a sleeker profile; 18-inch chrome split-spoke wheels; unique brake-cooling vents; slim-profile outside mirrors; hidden door handles featuring proximity remote opening; diamond-cut rear fascia with center-outlet exhaust; subtle fin-profile LED taillamps with light pipes; and a rear spoiler integrated into the center high-mounted stop lamp.

Hardware

With the capability to accommodate a wide range of engines, the 2011 Cadillac CTS Coupe is aimed at the needs of the global luxury market. These engines include the standard 304-hp, 3.6-liter direct-injection V-6 and possibly a new 2.9-liter turbo-diesel engine that's currently in development for international markets. The latter will deliver an estimated 250 hp and 406-lb.-ft. of torque. A 6-speed manual transmission is standard on the new CTS Coupe (a 6-speed automatic with driver shift control is optional).

Front suspension of the new CTS Coupe is independent, rear suspension is multi-link, and the car features "performance" disc brakes at all four corners. Two suspension-tuning levels are available on the new CTS Coupe: a Performance package with 18-inch wheels and all-season tires (available in both RWD and AWD,) and the Summer Tire Performance package, with 19-inch wheels and a higher level of road-holding capability, Cadillac says. Electronic stability control is standard.

Safety

Though Cadillac has yet to reveal a full list of standard and optional safety features for the 2011 CTS Coupe, the safety equipment list is likely to mirror that of the current CTS Sedan and Sport Wagon, which would include: dual front air bags; side-impact air bags for front-seat occupants; side curtain air bags; StabiliTrak stability and traction control system; and 4-wheel anti-lock brakes with dynamic rear proportioning and hydraulic brake assist.

The new CTS Coupe will also likely offer Automatic Crash Response, a feature of its standard OnStar telematics system (a free one-year subscription to OnStar services is included, but requires a monthly fee after the first year of ownership). With Automatic Crash Response, an OnStar advisor contacts the vehicle in the event of a severe collision. The advisor can communicate with vehicle occupants, summon emergency help to the scene, and pinpoint the vehicle's exact location as well as determine how bad the accident might be.

Other safety items that will likely be available as options include rear park-assist sensors, reversing camera, and an adaptive front lighting system that helps the driver see around curves.

Technology

As with most new Cadillacs, the new 2011 CTS Coupe is laden with new technology features, including (as standard or available): an integrated iPod/MP3 player; 40-GB hard drive for storing recorded and live music files; pop-up navigation system; adaptive forward lighting system; Bluetooth connectivity; standard Keyless Access and Smart Remote Start; rear camera system; Bose 5.1 Cabin Surround audio system; and standard OnStar with Turn-by-Turn Navigation.
