Created in 2001, the GMC Sierra 1500HD was created for the work-oriented customer wanting to exploit the full towing and hauling potential of a half-ton truck. Compared to the standard half-ton GMC product, the crew cab body style was unique to the Sierra 1500HD from 2001 to 2003. A 6.5-foot cargo box was the only bed length available with the GMC Sierra 1500HD. A truck operating on a heavy-duty suspension system, the Sierra 1500HD crew cab was featured with rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive.
Standard equipped with chrome 16-inch wheels, four-wheel ventilated disc brakes with anti-lock braking system provided solid, stable stopping power. The 2001 GMC Sierra 1500HD came exclusively with a 6.0-liter Vortec V-8 engine generating 300 horsepower and 360 pound-feet of torque. Paired with a four-speed automatic transmission, the Sierra 1500HD’s maximum towing capacity was rated at 10,300 pounds. Notable heavy-duty equipment found on the truck included an engine oil cooler along with an electrical system consisting of a 105-amp alternator and high-performance battery.
Capable of seating up to six occupants, the GMC Sierra 1500HD offered an impressive amount of comforts for potentially travelling to and from a worksite. Air conditioning, power windows, dual front airbags and a stereo system with CD player details some of the standard equipment found inside the Sierra 1500HD. From 2001 to 2006, the biggest change occurring with the GMC Sierra 1500HD was the availability of Quadrasteer in 2003. Quadrasteer allowed 2003 and 2005 Sierra 1500HDs to use four-wheel steering to reduce the truck’s turning circle. There were no 2004 model year Sierra 1500HD produced corresponding with the introduction of GMC‘s regular half-ton crew cab. After 2006, the GMC Sierra 1500HD was sold for one final year as part of the Sierra Classic line-up in 2007.
