When Ford abandoned the Five Hundred name in favor of the familiar Taurus moniker in 2008, Freestyle was replaced by the Taurus X wagon. Besides the name change, the large wagon-like 2008 Ford Taurus X was also dramatically improved. Receiving a slotted chrome grille, Ford Fusion-inspired taillights, the Taurus X also received enhanced power from a 263-horsepower 3.5-liter Duratec V-6 engine.
Whereas the Freestyle was exclusively offered with a continuously variable transmission, the 2008 Ford Taurus X featured a more conventional automatic gearbox with six speeds. For 2008, the Taurus X was offered in SEL, Limited and an Eddie Bauer trim level available as either a front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive configuration. Standard equipped, all 2008 Ford Taurus X models included driver Command Seating, AdvanceTrac electronic stability control, four-wheel disc brakes with anti-lock braking system, cruise control and air conditioning.
The Taurus X Limited featured a seven-speaker stereo system and 18-inch wheels while the Eddie Bauer model utilized a two-tone color appearance. 2008 Taurus X Eddie Bauer models also included Fords SYNC connectivity at no additional charge allowing major cell phones to be operated hands-free. Capable of accommodating up to seven passengers, the Ford Taurus X could hold up to 85.5 cubic feet of cargo when the two and third row seats are folded down.
Optional on the Taurus X was heated second-row heated seats that could be automatically folded with the press of a button. With the arrival of the Ford Flex in 2009, the Taurus X was dropped from the vehicle line-up after a two-year run.
