In the wake of a problematic reputation generated by the Pinto, Ford sought new respect in the compact car market in the early 1980s with the Escort name previous used in Europe since the late 1960s. The 1981 debut of the Ford Escort featured a three-door hatchback and wagon body style. A five-door hatchback was added to the Escort compact car line-up one year later. In late 1985, an exterior redesign of the Ford Escort that included a front end featuring body shape integrated headlights. Originally standard equipped with a 1.6-liter engine, displacement was enlarged to 1.9 liters through the 1985 update. The first generation model of the Ford Escort was also offered with a 2.0-liter diesel engine. The Escort underwent a complete second generation redesign in 1991 featuring a longer wheelbase and adding a four-door sedan. A third generation version of the Ford Escort debuted in 1997 incorporating a more rounded front end similar to the Contour. A sedan and wagon body style were initially introduced in 1997 while an Escort ZX2 coupe would arrive in 1998. In 2000, the arrival of the Ford Focus eventually replaced the Escort.
