A name first used by Dodge in the 1970s attached to a poorly received two-door product, Magnum granted a second appearance as a wagon for 2005. The 2005 Magnum became Dodges first car-like wagon since 1988 when a version based on the mid-sized Aries was last sold.
Constructed on the same LX platform as the brands Charger sedan, the Dodge Magnum was branded as a five-passenger sport wagon. Four-wheel disc brakes, air conditioning, power windows and 17-inch wheels were standard on the Magnum. The base powerplant for the 2005 Magnum SE consisted of a 2.7-liter V-6 engine generating 190 horsepower. Delivering up to 250 horsepower from a 3.5-liter V-6 engine, the SXT version of the Dodge Magnum could be equipped with either rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.
The peak performance version of the 2005 Magnum was the R/T powered by a 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 engine producing 340 horsepower. With a Multi-Displacement System, the HEMI engine could quickly switch from running on eight cylinders to two in order to conserve fuel. In 2006, Dodge added an SRT-8 version of the Magnum to the marketplace. The 2006 Magnum SRT-8 featured unique exterior and interior design touches, stiffer performance suspension, Brembo brakes and a 425-horsepower, 6.1-liter HEMI V-8 powerplant.
Also in 2006, a police edition of the Dodge Magnum was developed for law enforcement duty. Severe-duty cooling system, 160-amp alternator and heavy-duty cloth seating material were some specialized features used to market the Magnum police model. The final year of the Dodge Magnum, the 2008 version of the sport wagon featured a refreshed interior and exterior appearance.
On the Magnum R/T, high-intensity discharge headlights were optional while Sirius Backseat TV was also available. Despite popularity for the radical sport wagon, the Dodge Magnum was cut from the brands line-up after 2008.
