Chevrolet Tahoe Police Special Models and Tahoe Police Special History

When Chevrolet ceased production of the Caprice in 1996, the auto brand discontinued a vehicle popular to law enforcement. Fitting many of the attributes of Chevrolet Caprice such as a large size, V-8 engine and rear-wheel drive, the Tahoe Police Special was prepared as an alternative vehicle for police forces in 1998. Additionally, the high ground clearance of the Chevrolet Tahoe made the Police Special a more attractive option in snowy climates than a car. Offered only as with the Tahoe’s four-door body style, the Tahoe Police Special was only rear-wheel drive, the 1998 Chevrolet Tahoe Police Special received power from a 5.7 Vortec V-8 engine. Generating 255 horsepower and 330 pound-feet of torque, engine operates for the Tahoe Police Special model was supported by an electrical system featuring a high-capacity alternator and battery. Engine power to the rear wheels of the sport utility vehicle was fed through a four-speed automatic transmission. Fuel economy for the rear-wheel drive, V-8 powered police vehicle was rated at 14 miles per gallon city and 18 miles per gallon highway. A heavy-duty suspension, locking differential and special V-rated SBR tires added to the Police Special enhanced the Tahoe sport utility vehicle’s on-road performance. With up to 70.3 cubic feet of storage space behind the second-row seating, the Chevrolet Tahoe Police Special allowed officers to a large amount of needed gear. Front airbags inside and an anti-lock braking system on the outside of the Tahoe Police Special was standard safety equipment. For the 1999 model year, a four-wheel drive option was made available for the Chevrolet Tahoe Police Special allowing the law enforcement product to operate better off-road. This type of Tahoe Police Special discontinued in 1999 and was eventually replaced by a sport utility vehicle based on the GMT800 chassis platform.
