See All Model YearsLearn MoreAs a truck-based minivan, the Chevrolet Astro Cargo Van generated a loyal following in the commercial vehicle sector. The vehicles high roof and towing capacity exceeding 5,000 pounds were desirable attributes founding in the mid-sized cargo van. Receiving a major styling refresh in 1995, the Astro Cargo Van resembled Chevrolets larger Express van. Behind the two front seats, the mid-sized cargo van could accommodate up to 170.4 cubic feet of items. In 1998, the Astro Cargo Van was offered with both rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive configurations. From the Chevrolet Vortec family of truck engines, a 4.3-liter V-6 propelled the Astro Cargo Van generating 190 horsepower and 250 pound-feet of torque. The Vortec six-cylinder powerplant was matched with a four-speed automatic transmission with overdrive. Fuel economy was another quality of the Astro Cargo Van that made it alluring to professionals. With rear-wheel drive, overall fuel economy was rated at 19 miles per gallon while the all-wheel drive achieved 17 miles per gallon. Year-to-year changes in the Chevrolet Astro Cargo Van were minimal between 1998 and 2005. In 2002, the engine added multi-point fuel injection for better emission control and improved responsiveness. For better braking performance, a HydroBoost hydraulic assist brake booster was added to the Astro working in concert with four-wheel discs with anti-lock control. Production of the Astro Cargo Van ended after the 2005 model year following a 20-year run for the vehicle. A panel version of the Chevrolet Venture minivan was available to fill in the void left by the Astro.
