BMW X6 Models and X6 History

A radically styled cross between a sport sedan and crossover vehicle, the BMW X6 has been tough to properly categorized since its 2008 introduction. Longer and wider than the more traditional BMW X5 luxury crossover, the X6 received the designation of a Sports Activity Coupe. A sloped rear roof section and flared fender details were some atypical crossover utility design characteristics noted on the eye-catching BMW offering. The BMW X6 debuted in 2008 with the availability of two twin-turbocharged engines. The xDrive35i model featured a 300-horsepower 3.0-liter inline-six powerplant while a more potent xDrive50i was fitted with a 4.4-liter V-8 generating 400 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque. Originally featuring a six-speed automatic transmission, the X6 line received an eight-speed automatic gearbox for the 2011 model year. The X6 Sports Activity Coupe featured the first use of a Dynamic Performance Control system that worked in concert with the xDrive all-wheel drive to provide highly balanced handling. Configured to invoke a sports coupe feel, the BMW X6 featured a four-passenger cabin. Leather upholstery as well as an iDrive controlled climate and entertainment unit is found standard. In 2010, the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 was introduced combining two electric motors with a V-8 engine for a net performance totaling 480 horsepower and 575 pound-feet of torque. The ActiveHybrid X6 was discontinued after the 2012 model year. Also debuting in 2010 was the BMW X6 M model with a 555-horsepower engine.
