BMW X5 Models and X5 History

The BMW X5 provided the German luxury car company with its first endeavor in the crossover vehicle marketplace. Debuting for the 2000 model year, the BMW X5 sport activity vehicle was the first product to roll off the Spartanburg, South Carolina assembly facility. A high-end luxury crossover vehicle, standard features such as traction control and self-leveling suspension was included on the 2000 BMW X5. The vehicle was introduced with a 4.4-liter V-8 engine generating 282 horsepower and 324 pound-feet of torque. A 3.0-liter inline-six engine was added to the X5 in 2001 providing a more fuel-efficient option with the luxury crossover vehicle. The crossover vehicle shared the car platform used for the 5 Series sedan but incorporated all-wheel drive control systems found on Land Rover products. In 2002, a third engine choice on the BMW X5 consisted of a 340-horsepower 4.6-liter V-8 engine. The 2004 model year BMW X5 received a styling refresh involving sportier lines. Also in 2004, the X5s 4.6-liter V-8 engine was replaced with a more potent 4.8-liter powerplant. Completely engineered for the 2007 model year, a larger X5 crossover featured greater refinement. BMWs iDrive controller was added standard to the redesigned 2007 BMW X5 providing a consolidated user experience for interior controls. The 2007 model year BMW X5 also expanded its interior to accommodate seven passengers. For 2009, a diesel engine model of the crossover vehicle was offered for the first time. In 2010, an enhanced array of electronic features such as Active Steering, four-zone climate control and heads-up display is available on the luxury crossover vehicle. A turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six generating 300 horsepower replaced the naturally aspirated engine base engine in 2011. The 2014 model year BMW X5 received styling and engineering enhancements. The entire 2014 BMW X5 line-up channels power through an eight-speed automatic transmission.
