BMW 7 Series Models and 7 Series History

The flagship sedan of the BMW line-up, the 7 Series represents the peak of luxury for the German car brand. Offered with a wheelbase length of 115 inches and 121 inches, the 1998 BMW 7 Series would be propelled by either V-8 or a V-12 engine. The 740i and 740iL was powered by a 282-horsepower, 4.4-liter V-8 engine while the 750iL featured a 326-horsepower, 5.4-liter V-12 power unit. In 1998, Dynamic Stability Control became standard on all versions of the sedans. The longer wheelbase models of the BMW 7 Series provided the rear occupant over five inches of additional legroom. For 2002, the BMW 7 Series received what was possibility the most polarizing style ever revealed on a production car by the German manufacturer at that time.

The radical design of the 2002 BMW 7 Series Values sedan was softened through a 2006 model year facelift. In addition to the unconventional BMW styling, the iDrive electronic controller debuted on the 2002 model year 7 Series. Unpopular at the beginning, the iDrive controller was gradually refined in following years. Power for the 2002 model was derived from a 4.4-liter V-8 or a 438-horsepower 6.0-liter V-12 both featuring advanced technologies such as Valvetronic and double-VANOS. The 2006 model year replaced the 745i with a 750i model propelled by a 4.8-liter V-8 producing 360 horsepower.

In 2008, BMW dealerships sold a limited number of high-performance 7 Series models called the ALPINA B7 propelled by a 500 horsepower 4.8-liter engine. The 2009 BMW 7 Series received a complete redesign featuring enhancements throughout the luxury sedan such as a new suspension setup. A direct-injection, twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V-8 generating 400-horsepower propelled the 2009 BMW 7 Series. All-wheel drive and a new V-12 engine were added to the BMW 7 Series line-up in 2010 producing 535 horsepower. In 2011, the powerplant options expanded to includes a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged engine and a hybrid model. Styling was mildly retouched in 2013 to incorporate LED headlights and improved driving technologies.
