The 2.4-liter engine was updated in 1999 to make it more efficient, with new fuel injectors, new injection rails and a new manifold and catalytic converter. Brand-new fascias in the front and rear made the Sunfire sportier in 2000, with a new five-speed transmission available, updated rocker panels and a redesigned gauge cluster. The GT trim was discontinued in 2001, leaving only the base model coupe and sedan. A tilt steering wheel and an electronic trunk release handle were added in 2002. New fascias in the front and rear, updated suspension and four new trims debuted in 2003, and ABS brakes were removed from the standard equipment list, with new optional packages being added.
