Mercedes Benz CLS Models and CLS History

For the 2006 model year, Mercedes-Benz first offered American buyers undecided between sport coupes and four-door sedans with a compelling design fusion. Classified as a ‘four-door coupe', the Mercedes-Benz CLS incorporated a swept profile that included prominent character side lines that ran from the front wheel wells to the rear taillights. Specifically crafted for the CLS-Class, the four-passenger interior features a large center console that runs from the dashboard to the rear seat. Introduced in 2006 with the choice of the CLS500 and CLS55 AMG trim level, the 2007 model year delivered two more potent models. The 2007 Mercedes-Benz CLS550 was propelled by a 382-horsepower, 5.5-liter V-8 while a new CLS63 AMG boasted 469 horsepower. A mid-cycle refresh to the CLS-Class in 2009 with a mild exterior restyle. For 2012, the Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class was completely redesigned and retooled. The new-look 2012 CLS-Class boasted standard power from a 402-horsepower V-8 engine and introduced the option of 4Matic all-wheel drive. An all-new Mercedes-Benz CLS63 AMG debuting for the second generation featured a 550-horsepower engine connected to a seven-speed multi-clutch transmission and a 3.9-second 0 to 60-mile per hour acceleration time. Starting in 2015, buyers of the four-door coupe could choose a six-cylinder powerplant for the first time. The twin-turbocharged V-6 powered Mercedes-Benz CLS400 also accompanied styling updates to the entire model line and availability of a nine-speed automatic transmission.
