GMC's full integration of the Sierra name into their full-sized truck line-up in 1987 included the one-ton capacity level 3500. The Sierra 3500 was the top capacity pickup was among the GMC vehicles gaining a monumental upgrade to the GMT400 platform. Featuring a fully-welded frame, the GMC Sierra 3500 was offered in regular cab, extended cab and crew cab body styles. Gasoline engine power came from 5.7-liter and 7.4-liter V-8 powerplants while a diesel was also available. With a fifth-wheel towing hitch, the 1988 Sierra 3500 was rated to move a maximum load up to 19,000 pounds. The GMT400-based Sierra 3500 was replaced in 2001 by a one-ton capacity truck built on an all-new frame. The 2001 GMC Sierra 3500 received standard power from a 300-horsepower, 6.0-liter Vortec V-8 engine. A gasoline-powered 8.1-liter V-8 and 6.6-liter Duramax diesel was also available with the one-ton truck in 2001. Similar to the previous model, three cabin styles were offered with the truck. The conventional level GMC one-ton truck continued for one year under the Sierra 3500 Classic name for 2007 but would ultimately be discontinued and replaced by the Sierra 3500HD.
