Upon introduction, the 1999 GMC New Sierra 1500 was offered as a regular and extended cab model equipped with a Wideside bed.

The extended cab versions of the truck received a standard third door for rear seat passengers. The interior of the 1999 New Sierra 1500 was expanded compared to the previous generation for extra comfort. Four-wheel disc brakes with anti-lock braking system, dual airbags, tilt adjustable steering wheel and 16-inch wheels came standard on the GMC truck.

Available as a rear-wheel or four-wheel drive model, the 1999 GMC New Sierra 1500 featured a line-up of three Vortec engines. The base powerplant was a 4.3-liter V-6 engine generating 200 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque offered with the choice of a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission. When mated with a manual gearbox, the 4.3-liter V-6 engine allows the GMC New Sierra 1500 to achieve fuel economy up to 23 miles per gallon.

For eight-cylinder power inspired by technology used on the Chevrolet Corvette, a 255-horsepower 4.8-liter and 270-horsepower 5.3-liter engine could also be used to propel the pickup truck. Equipped with the 5.3-liter Vortec V-8 powerplant, the 1999 GMC New Sierra 1500 can tow up to 8,000 pounds. When GMC dropped the previous generation Sierra 1500 after the 2000 model year, the newer half-ton pickup truck became the only choice for customers.
