About Sprinter Passenger

Seen with a Mercedes-Benz badge in Europe through the 1990s, the Sprinter van debuted in North American through the Freightliner truck brand. Debuting in 2002, the sale of the commercial van marked the first time Freightliner participated in the light duty vehicle segment. The passenger version of the 2002 Freightliner Sprinter was introduced with three different wheelbase lengths and was offered with a high roof option. Possessing a maximum passenger capacity of ten occupants, the 2002 Sprinter Passenger Van was powered by five-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine. Electronic stability control was added standard to all models of the 2004 Freightliner Sprinter with an upgraded version arriving for the 2006 model year. Completely retooled for 2007, the Sprinter Passenger Van received an updated exterior with a more prominent grille appearance as well as a new 3.0-liter V-6 diesel engine featuring BlueTEC SCR technology. A 3.5-liter gasoline engine was briefly available from 2007 but discontinued in 2009. The second-generation Freightliner passenger van also briefly included an upgraded capacity rating to 12 occupants. A 2.1-liter diesel became the Sprinter's new base engine starting in 2014 while four-wheel drive became an option in 2015.
