About Silverado 1500 Hybrid

The Chevrolet Silverado 1500 pickup truck became the first mass-produced hybrid of its kind in 2005 and was the first hybrid vehicle built by a General Motors division. The 2005 model year hybrid pickup truck was introduced with only an extended cab body style available with either a two-wheel or four-wheel drive train. A unique 14-kilowatt starter generator replacing the conventional starter and alternator was combined with a 295-horsepower, 5.3-liter Vortec 5300 V-8 gasoline engine. While the electrical system did not provide any motivation for the Silverado 1500 Hybrid pickup truck, it did allow fuel savings of up to 10 percent. Using stop/start technology, fuel economy of 18 miles per gallon city and 21 miles per gallon highway was achieved with the two-wheel drive 2005 Silverado 1500 Hybrid. An asset for worksite workers, the 2005 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Hybrid included 12-volt power outlets in the truck bed allowing power tools to operate off the electrical system. Discontinued after the 2007 model year (known as the Silverado 1500 Classic Hybrid), Chevrolet revisited electric-assisted power train in 2009. Unlike the previous hybrid system on the Silverado 1500, the 2009 model vehicle provided a type of electric assistance related to the movement of the truck. Featuring only a crew cab body style, the 2009 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Hybrid is propelled by a 6.0-liter Vortec V-8 engine connected to a two-mode hybrid transmission. Technology General Motors co-developed with Chrysler and BMW, the two-mode hybrid transmission on the Silverado 1500 Hybrid consisted of two electric motors integrated with a four-speed automatic gearbox. Providing qualities similar to a continuously variable transmission, the 332-horsepower powertrain of the truck achieved fuel economy of 21 miles per gallon city and 22 miles per gallon highway. During the final year of production in 2013, the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Hybrid came standard with dual-zone climate control, Bluetooth connectivity and an EZ-Lift locking tailgate.
