Chevrolet Lumina Models and Lumina History

The Chevrolet Lumina was introduced as part of an all-new philosophy in car design and technology. Directly completing against the Ford Taurus, the Lumina exhibited a modern style and several desirable attributes for families. The Lumina name was lent to a two-door coupe as well as four-door sedan bodystyle from 1990 to 1994. In 1995, a restyling of the Chevrolet Lumina resulted in the model existing only as a sedan. The 1998 Chevrolet Lumina was presented with base, LS and LTZ trim levels. The base model of the Lumina included anti-lock brakes, dual front airbags, air conditioning and an AM/FM cassette player. Upgrading to the LS model added cruise control remote keyless entry and power windows to the standard features list.

Standard equipped with a 3.1-liter V-6 engine generating 160 horsepower, the 1998 Chevrolet Lumina’s powerplant was matched with a four-speed automatic transmission and achieved up to 29 miles per gallon in highway fuel economy. The 1998 Chevrolet Lumina LS and the luxuriously outfitted Lumina LTZ could be opted with a 3.8-liter V-6. Leather seats, power windows and aluminum wheels were also included with the LTZ trim package. Equipped with standard six-passenger seating, the Lumina presented 15.7 cubic feet of cargo room. For 2000, Chevrolet began to replace the fresher Lumina moniker from their vehicle line-up reintroducing the historic Impala name as the brand’s new family sedan. Available only as a base trim vehicle, the last year of sales for the Chevrolet Lumina in 2001 was focused on fleet customers.
