The Buick Lucerne was introduced in 2006 as a full-sized sedan replacement to the popular Buick LeSabre and the larger Park Avenue. Buicks flagship four-door sedan, the Lucerne was capable of accommodating five or six passengers depending on the selected interior layout. Base power for the 2006 Lucerne sedan was derived from a 3.8-liter V-6 engine producing 197 horsepower. The Lucerne sedan became the Buick to offer a V-8 powerplant since the Roadmaster was discontinued after 1996. A 4.6-liter Northstar V-8 engine was introduced on the Lucerne with a 275-horsepower output. Ventiports on the front quarter panel of the car can be used to determine the engine (three holes for the V-6 and four holes for the V-8). Along with welcoming back an old Buick car trait, the Lucerne also featured a number of firsts for the brand. Magnetic Ride Control, brake assist, heated and cooled front seats as well as a heated windshield washer fluid system was first installed on the full-sized sedan. Lucernes equipped with the heated windshield washer fluid system would ultimately be recalled to deactivate the technology due to safe concerns. In 2008, the bolder, sportier Lucerne Super debuted with an upgraded Northstar V-8 engine delivering 292 horsepower. The base V-6 engine was replaced with a 3.9-liter V-6 powerplant that generated 30 additional horsepower compared to its predecessor. 2009 also included the addition of Bluetooth connectivity and flex-fuel compatibility to run E85 blended fuel. The Buick Lucerne was dropped after the 2011 Lucerne model year without a direct replacement for the division.
