2015 model year changes

The big change for the 2015 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class is in the GL450's engine compartment, where a new turbocharged 3.0L V6 replaces the previous 4.6L V8. The new engine produces 362 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque, right on par with the engine it replaces but also more fuel efficient, with stop-start technology that helps it achieve 19 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway.

Competitive comparison

Tough, yet luxurious styling; brawny engines; fuel-efficient BlueTec diesel; smooth ride; three rows of seating; leading-edge safety-tech features

Special features for 2015

The Mercedes-Benz GL-Class is a step larger and roomier than most other luxury crossovers as it has three rows of usable seating, but it does compete directly with a set of vehicles that includes the Audi Q7 and Infiniti QX56, as well as the Cadillac Escalade. Among these, the GL-Class stands out for being less truck-like in look and feel, with a more refined ride. The set of luxury features on offer in the GL-Class is also stronger than most in this class, with some of the same advanced-tech items that wow in Mercedes-Benz' S-Class flagship. The fuel-efficient, clean-diesel GL350 BlueTec is a major highlight. It manages to get up to 26 mpg yet with no serious penalty in performance.

The seven-passenger large-sized GL-Class SUV by Mercedes-Benz comes in four trims (GL350 Bluetec, GL450, GL550 and GL63 AMG) and is nicely stacked with the base model. Rounding out the standard features are 19” wheels, rails on the roof, air suspension with automated leveling, LED running lights, LED tail lights, privacy glass in the rear, powered liftgate, sunroof, backup camera, two-zone climate control (automated), interior wood trim accents, folding third-row (powered) and a 7” touchscreen display console with GPS and Bluetooth/iPod/USB integration. Upgraded trim levels or various optional packages add a lot more muster to the GL-Class’ might, and include sundries like: climate conditioned cup holders (hot/cold), standard 115-volt electric outlet, bi-xenon headlamps (adaptive), parking assist system, 360 backup camera, lane tracking and collision detection system, powered and heated front seats, 21” wheels, remote entry/start, triple-zone climate control (automated), leather seating and premium 13-speaker Harman Kardon stereo system. A number of engines are offered, based upon the trim level selected. They include: a 3.0-liter turbo-diesel V6 engine that makes 240 horsepower and 455 pound-feet of torque; a 4.7-liter turbocharged V8 engine that’s rated at 362 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque (or for 429 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque with the GL550 trim). The GL-Class comes with a four-year/50,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty.
