2014 Hyundai Equus
NADAguides Test Drive Review
Overall Score

The 2014 Hyundai Equus continues to represent value and an easier entry into its class as it comes loaded with many standard luxury, comfort and technology features at a very competitive price. The Equus also has a spacious back seat and provides a quiet and extremely comfortable ride while propelled by a powerful V8 engine.

The 2014 Hyundai Equus does not handle or provide the same level of steering feel and control as others within the luxury sedan class. Also, other "elite", large, luxury sedans have the advantage in terms of interior material quality, but not by much as the Equus is generously luxurious. Fuel economy didn't quite stack up against the competition either.

What's new for 2014

The 2014 Equus received mild exterior and interior styling touch-ups. The front bumper and grill now have cleaner lines without the extra chrome from the earlier models. LED fog lights are also an addition to the front. New jet engine-looking 19-inch aluminum wheels provide a visual upgrade and improvement over the thicker chrome rims of the past. The interior has been upgraded with an all-new, simpler and modern dashboard, center console and steering wheel. A tri-zone climate control system has replaced the dual-zone of the previous model as well.

Exterior Impressions

The new exterior styling makes the 2014 Equus a simpler-looking sedan than before which is appreciated. It presents a more modern appeal in the 2014 Equus reminiscent to recent changes made by Lexus and Mercedes Benz in their large luxury sedans for this model year. This is an improvement as it sells more of a luxury feeling not relying on as much chrome as before to "fancy" things up. It's big and immediately shows quality everywhere you look around the exterior. A true competitor with this respect within the segment and worth a close inspection of fit, finish and detail.

Exterior Features

Notable exterior features include 19-inch alloy wheels, all season P275/40R19 tires, a power glass sunroof, power rear sunshade, variable/intermittent wipers that are rain sensitive and updated taillight design.

Exterior Summary
Interior Impressions

The 2014 Hyundai Equus is one of the most comfortable full-size sedans in its class. Space was not compromised in the making of the vehicle along with a sizable interior the cargo space is also very spacious being 16.7 cubic feet. The quality of leather and wood paneling are given high praise adding a touch of class. On the downside a bulky center console takes up too much room in the front of the sedan. A new 9.2 inch screen demands your attention set in the front dash where you take control of several features and options.

Interior Features

Included in the Equus are front and rear parking sensors, keyless entry, remote trunk release, 12-way power driver seat, 10-way power passenger seat, heated seats, heated power mirrors, height adjustable front seats, leather seats, DVD player, USB connection, video monitor, a subwoofer, 17 speakers, Bluetooth connectivity, a navigation system and satellite radio.

Driving Impressions

Hyundai continues to evolve their luxury-car product and strategy. This is evident in the refined 2014 Equus. In nearly all areas, it is an upgrade from previous years which in itself is impressive. There are a few areas that still far short of the competition, but these are not enough to deter the serious consideration of luxury-car shoppers. Inside the Equus, every technological feature and option is accounted for which makes life and driving easier and more enjoyable. The interior is comfortable, quiet and soft to the touch. The rear-wheel drive V8 Equus produces plenty of power in all driving conditions and smoothly with near seamless shifting. As cliché as it sounds, driving the Equus is like riding on air and in respectable style.
