2013 Volkswagen Touareg
NADAguides Test Drive Review

Decades ago, Volkswagen’s contribution to the realm of sport utility vehicles was a military based product humorously known as the Thing. When Volkswagen introduced the Touareg in 2002, the image of a fun, sophisticated crossover vehicle replaced the utilitarian image left by the Thing. Teetering between family and luxury vehicle, the 2013 Volkswagen Touareg is also no slouch in the utility department. Available in a Sport, Lux, Executive and an all-new Hybrid trim level for the 2013 model year, the Volkswagen Touareg is an all-wheel drive European inspired creation engineered to satisfy the lofty requests of premium vehicle buyers.

One of the first Volkswagen vehicles to undergo a contemporary restyle three years ago, the 2013 Volkswagen Touareg remains a mature expression of luxury crossover motoring. A smooth, elegant exterior shape is the ideal mix of sportiness and premium class. Respectable for a crossover vehicle design, the 2013 Volkswagen Touareg is sculpted to a 0.37 drag coefficient. The Touareg’s 7.9 inches of ground clearance provides a small lift-up for children but is manageable for family lifestyles. The 2013 Volkswagen Touareg’s stature off the ground is an incentive for climbing over speed bumps with little worry or for handling light off-roading tours. Contact with urban or rural trails is maintained with all-season tires. Aluminum-alloy wheels on the 2013 Volkswagen Touareg are between 18 and 20 inches in diameter depending on the trim level choice.

The hallmarks of German engineering are incorporated into the 2013 Volkswagen Touareg. Sharing mechanical similarities with the Audi Q7 and Porsche Cayenne, the 2013 Volkswagen Touareg is constructed to exhibit qualities of premium comfort. Riding on a lightweight suspension system with steel coil springs on each wheel, the 2013 Touareg performs comfortably and quietly. Despite weighing a rather hefty 4,974 pounds, the crossover vehicle’s balance is well proportioned for a controlled ride. The 2013 Volkswagen Touareg treks well in everyday environments thanks to a 39-foot turning circle. Blind spots are minimal on the 2013 Volkswagen Touareg allowing the motorist an unobstructed view of surroundings. A rear back-up camera is also available on the Touareg for an extra level of assistance when reversing.

Three powerplant options are available on the 2013 Volkswagen Touareg attracting customers with varying ideologies. The 2013 line-up for the Touareg can be purchased with a gasoline-powered 3.6 liter V-6, 3-liter turbocharged diesel or a hybrid version integrating an electric motor with a supercharged gasoline powerplant. With the TDI diesel powerplant, a turbocharger unit helps in extracting 240 horsepower from the six-cylinder engine block. Maintaining a 3.6 liter displacement size as the 2012 model, the 2013 version of the TDI powerplant underwent some mechanical changes. Consisting of a reduced weight, the upgraded TDI diesel powering models of the 2013 Volkswagen Touareg received a 15 horsepower output boost from the previous year. Mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission with two overdrive gears, the 2013 Volkswagen Touareg TDI accelerates nicely possessing power for various kinds of road conditions. The Touareg’s automatic transmission includes driver prompted manual shifting through Tiptronic control and a Sport mode setting. Dynamic Shift Program designed to tailor shifting patterns to an individual’s driving style is another quality found in the performance delivery of the 2013 Volkswagen Touareg. Fuel economy for the Touareg is on average 20 miles per gallon or better. The 2013 Volkswagen Touareg equipped with a TDI diesel engine achieves the highest mileage per gallon with 20 miles city and 29 miles highway fuel consumption.

When the 2013 Volkswagen Touareg’s power is channeled out of the smooth performing transmission, the wheels spin through a 4Motion permanent all-wheel drive system. Standard throughout the 2013 Touareg line-up, Volkswagen’s 4Motion all-wheel drive setup is equipped with a limited-slip Torsen differential. Available torque is distributed with 40 percent devoted to the Touareg’s front wheels and the remaining 60 percent sourced through the rear. Also found closely to the Volkswagen Touareg’s wheels are 13-inch disc brakes assisted by anti-lock control and electronic brake force distribution insuring meaningful stops. Electronic stability control is standard on all 2013 Volkswagen Touareg models.

With an exterior provoking the exploration of city, highway and maybe even dirt roads, the cabin area of the 2013 Volkswagen Touareg is a comfortable way to commute to a desired destination. Designed to accommodate five passengers, a spacious Touareg interior provides a high-end layout showing great consideration for riders. Volkswagen placed a good deal of effort guaranteeing controls are planted around the interior in a user-friendly manner. With plenty of headroom and legroom throughout, the four-door entry proves most welcoming to passengers of many sizes. Behind the rear row seating, cargo room for the 2013 Volkswagen Touareg is a useful 32.1 cubic feet. The room is expandable to 64 cubic feet when the rear seats are folded down.

The trim level choices of the Volkswagen Touareg dictate the kind of premium comfort occupants will expect. Providing an eight-speaker sound system with six-disc CD changer, Bluetooth and dual-zone climate control, the 2013 Volkswagen Touareg Sport model’s interior features the use of a V-Tex leatherette seat covering material. A leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob delivers the look as well as a tactile feel of sport combined with luxury. The Lux version of the Touareg upgrades the seating with Vienna leather while also adding 12-way power front seats and a powered panoramic sunroof. Installed with luxury comfort for all passengers, the Executive trimmed model includes heated seats for the front and rear row. Available on the 2013 Volkswagen Touareg is a RNS 850 navigation system operating from an eight-inch touchscreen. The performance from the electronic infotainment system is quite brilliant with a responsive interface and detailed imagery.

Thanks to the marriage of luxury and performance, the 2013 Volkswagen Touareg remains a popular choice in the premium crossover segment.
