An iconic compact car, the 2013 Volkswagen Beetle Convertible Turbo is the convertible variant of the standard Volkswagen Beetle. The Beetle Convertible combines all the sought-after elements of the standard vehicle with miles of headroom, the perfect equation to increase driver enjoyment. A convenient daily driver, the Beetle’s size makes it incredibly easy to park but don’t let the size fool you, the turbocharged engine provides plenty of power for a convertible cruiser. The adequate power translates into a light and easy ride, with solid turning.

At first glance it’s evident that Volkswagen has implemented a modern twist to the classic beetle design. Familiar headlights are presented on an updated front fascia, with a lower roofline and rear spoiler that give the Beetle a performance inspired look. The fit of exterior panels are well made with the exception of the hood that exposes a gap between the bumper and fenders while closed. Highly customizable, the Beetle Convertible Turbo is offered in ten exterior colors, two soft-top colors, and four interior colors.

Under the hood you will find a 2.0-liter TSI engine capable of producing 200 hp. Such ample power translates in the Beetle accelerating nimbly, especially around 4000 rpm where the power is fully unleashed. The car is quick, thanks to the turbo, but a lag is noticeable until those higher rpms are reached. That being said, the overall ride is an assuring one, with responsive braking that gives the driver a safe and grounded feeling. Transmissions consist of a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed DSG® automatic transmission with Tiptronic® and Sport Mode. Shift timing can be adjusted using the multiple drive modes but gear changes may be rougher than expected. Fuel mileage falls within an EPA estimated range of 21 mpg city to 30 mpg highway.

The Volkswagen Beetle interior screams attention to detail, with extremely well finished fittings, leather and light chrome on the dash and door, and carbon fiber styled accents. Aside from looking exceptional, the interior boasts impressive ergonomics. Buttons and dials have a nice feel and tactile feedback. Additionally, the Media/Navigation/Audio center is easy to use and the accompanying touch-screen system is appropriately responsive. The shift handle is wrapped in leather and the area around dash and paddle is adorned with textured plastic shifters.

Even though the Beetle is classified as a compact car the front seats are quite comfortable, with plenty of legroom for drive and passenger. Unfortunately, the backseats have limited legroom and accessing them is challenge. Interior quality is accentuated by standard A/C, quick/smooth windows, and sturdy dials. A few small drawbacks include a slightly smaller, yet comfortable, steering wheel and trunk space that won’t be able to fit large luggage (rear seats do fold flat for additional room).

Features include hands-free phone capabilities, heated front seats, keyless entry, start/stop button, steering wheel mounted controls, remote trunk open, and a temporary spare tire. For an enhanced sporty look Volkswagen has adorned the dash with pods that show the oil temperature, lap time, and a boost gauge.

A quality ride, the Beetle Convertible is smooth and quiet (for a sporty model) with a light body that turns well in corners (there is a small amount of body roll). Traction control does an excellent job of keeping the driver safe and in control, an important element due to the Beetle’s small size. The small size does have its benefits (35.4 ft. full circle turning radius), but surprisingly the Beetle has two rather large rear blind spots due to a small rear window. Luckily, the short length of the vehicle enables drivers to use the mirrors to compensate for the blind areas.
