2013 Land Rover LR4
NADAguides Test Drive Review

A versatile vehicle with off-road capability, the 2013 Land Rover LR4 is a mid-size SUV that blends legendary Land Rover ruggedness with comfort and luxury.  The LR4 is equipped with a four-corner air suspension and Terrain Response, which can raise the car up to 4.92 inches for off road conditions. The air suspension creates a smooth and comfortable ride while Terrain Response ensures that the smooth ride extends over any driving medium. Safe at all speeds, the LR4 is equipped with gradient acceleration control; a feature that maintains downhill speed, even on rough or slippery surfaces. The LR4 is nimble and extremely easy to handle, however cornering and sharp turns should be taken with caution due to the height and top weight of the vehicle. In cases where the car may tip slightly, stability control and roll stability control (helps prevent the vehicle from rolling over when it senses a slight tipping of the car it will reduce power and use the brake system) assist in keeping the vehicle stable.

Equipped with the black design package, the LR4 has black door handles, grill, mirrors, vents, badges and roof rails. An all white body with the black design elements compliments the overall sporty look and unique shape of the LR4. All exterior lines work well with the aggressive styling and tight panels create a clean, sporty body. The Land Rover LR4 has a plethora of exterior color shades; including green, blue, black, grey, red, silver, sand, teal, and bronze.

Under the hood drivers will find a 5.0-liter V8 engine that produces 375 hp and 375 lb-ft of torque. Ample engine power provides a smooth and continuous acceleration. Shifting is lag-free, as a result of the 6-speed ZF transmission with commandshift. Four Channel All Terrain Anti Lock Braking system and EPB (Electronic Parking Brake) provide an overall excellent braking system for the LR4 – with superb responsiveness. Easy handling, regardless of driving speed, allows for immediate feedback with any driving style. One of the few drawbacks of the LR4 is the poor fuel economy; 12 mpg city and 17 mpg highway, a downside that is simply outweighed by all of the positive aspects of the vehicle.

Sporting an expertly designed interior, with utility and comfort in mind, the LR4 is equipped with features that enhance the driving experience for all passengers. Everything is built with high quality materials and buttons/dials are ergonomically placed in the central dash for easy access. Interior accent options include black lacquer or straight grain walnut and premium leather seating that gives the interior a luxurious appeal. Incredibly intuitive, the Bluetooth is easy to set up and auto connects upon entry of vehicle once paired for music streaming and handsfree phone capabilities. Similarly, the navigation system, menu, audio controls are all very user friendly for driver and passenger.

Unlike other SUVs in its class, the LR4 doesn't have an uncomfortable seat in the entire car. From the driver to rear passenger, each seat is crafted with premium leather and built for comfort. The 4-door layout makes the back row easy to get into and out of. A 3rd row option is available, but it's a bit of a tight squeeze and obstructs back row accessibility. Adults should have no trouble sitting in the back of the vehicle due to plenty of rear legroom and headroom. The steering wheel is extremely comfortable with two 5-way toggles for easy adjustment and comfort - negating any possible obstruction of panels. It contains controls for Bluetooth, audio control, cruise control, and display cluster controls. An adequate trunk provides ample cargo space, and third and second row seats can be folded down for extra space when needed. Interesting features include a center console cooler box, three sunroofs (front, second and third row), asymmetrical split tailgate (convenient for loading and unloading), rain sensing wipers, and one shot global close window switch.

Additional features include a 7-inch backup camera screen that allows for increased visibility, rear sensors with audible alert, Bluetooth streaming and aux with iPod connectivity, heated front seats, keyless entry with parametric sensing security system, push-button start/stop, touch-screen navigation, Sirius satellite radio, premium audio system, and remote trunk open.

Usable as a daily driver, blind spots are neutralized by large rear windows. Parking is a breeze due to an excellent turning radius and Rear Park Distance Control system which alerts you when objects are too close to the vehicle. The LR4 offers a smooth ride, that's easy to handle with plenty of cargo space. It's full of technological features that are intuitive and offers additional bonus features that other SUVs can't compete with. Simply put, it's a car that you don't want to get out of.
