New and used cars safety rating

Slightly altered for 2013 (the EX turbo trim level is no longer offered), the Kia Optima is a mid-size sedan equipped with FWD and seating for five. The Optima is available with a standard 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine that produces 200 hp and 186 lb-ft of torque or an optional 2.0-liter 4-cylinder turbocharged engine that yields 274 hp and 269 lb-ft of torque. Both engines are paired to the same 6-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission that enables the Optima to achieve fuel mileage within an EPA estimated range of 22 mpg city to 35 mpg highway. Features include 18-inch alloy wheels, sport-tuned suspension, HID headlights, rear camera display, navigation system, heated/cooled seats, leather trim, and interior carbon fiber accents. Safety is comprised of advanced airbags, vehicle stability management (VSM), electronic stability control (ESC), traction control system (TCS), brake assist system (BA), electronic brake-force distribution (EBD), and tire pressure monitoring (TPMS). The Optima is backed by a 5-year/60,000-mile warranty.

2013 model year changes View changes +

This year, the Optima gets only a few minor styling changes, including a revised Kia badge for the hood, trunk, and steering wheel and a new Remington Red hue that replaces Spicy Red. A new front-seat sliding-headrest design is standard on all three Optima models. An SX Limited model is new to the lineup, adding a premium sporty look, along with additional upgrades, to the top-of-the-line SX. Also, Kia has dropped the mid-range EX Turbo model for 2013, and dropped the manual-transmission version of the Optima entirely.

Special features for 2013 View special features +

Compared to other mid-size sedans, the Kia Optima continues to stand out for several reasons. Showcasing Kia's more Euro-influenced design direction, the Optima has styling that's more exciting than that of other mid-size sedans, especially from the outside. And that design works out to be quite roomy on the inside. It's also one of the most fuel-efficient mid-size sedans, and it offers quite sporty performance considering its mileage numbers. The turbocharged engine in the SX in particular provides the power and acceleration of a V6 but the gas mileage of a four. The Optima is also a very strong value, with a few more features at each trim level than what's found in most comparable models. Kia's strong 10-year warranty on powertrain components remains another strong selling point.
