2013 Ford Fusion Energi
NADAguides Test Drive Review

Fairly large for a mid-size sedan, the 2013 Ford Fusion Hybrid has been extensively redesigned, inside and out. The Fusion Hybrid offers adequate ride quality, with smooth driving at any speed. Its size gives it a very safe and stable feel, although acceleration does drag a bit.

The re-styled front fascia end is a huge improvement from previous designs. Exterior elements and materials are strong and well built, creating a solid finish with tight lines. Available in multiple colors, Ford offers 10 exterior and 2 interior shades.

Under the hood drivers will find a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder hybrid engine that produces 141 HP. Fuel economy is very impressive, boasting an EPA estimated 47 mpg city and 47 mpg highway. Power delivery is smooth, and a decent amount of torque is produced from the electric engine at slower speeds, but overall acceleration feels a bit sluggish. Braking is adequate with decent distance. The Ford Fusion handles well, but is a little on the soft side. Though overall performance isn’t the best in its class, the Fusion Hybrid definitely out works most vehicles in the hybrid class.

Interior elements are standard, but leather trim and a matte finish create an upgraded experience to the overall look and feel. Engineering quality is high grade and from an ergonomic standpoint the Fusion has placed buttons and dials in appropriate areas for best overall function and use. Interior dimensions are spacious, with plenty of room for front passengers and a standard amount for passengers in backseat. Roominess extends to a large trunk that will easily fit bigger luggage. Controls are intuitive, and the Media center/Nav/Climate/Audio controls are all on a large touchscreen that is very easy to use, with a second screen next to your tachometer, enabling the driver to stay focused on the road. All functions can also be conveniently controlled by the steering wheel mounted controls. Interesting features include dual climate controls (for both driver and passenger) and regenerative braking that gives the driver a feedback score of how much energy is stored at every stop.

Features include a backup camera and parking sensors, Bluetooth hands-free phone capability, heated seats, and remote unlock/trunk pop. Due to its weight, the car feels very heavy around corners but also gives the driver a well-planted feeling. Fastback styling results in a slight blind spot, but no more than any other similar four door vehicle. Cornering is average with an expected amount of body roll. The 2-speed CVT makes for quality shifting, the turning radius is 18.8 feet, and the transition from electric to the gas engine is unnoticeable. Not for the performance-oriented driver, the 2013 Ford Fusion Hybrid is the right car for those who want efficient fuel economy without sacrificing space.
